if a business approaches you about using one of your pictures, should you insist on getting credit for it? will an email authorizing use suffice? can they use a pic that is posted on DG?
Pls tell us how you've successfully handled this situation. Also tell us of problems. TIA

What is the protocol for letting others use your pictures?
Absolutely!
Insist on nothing less than full credit, and to be posted clearly and most visible credit, (given) to the photographer/owner!
As for (your) photos that have already been posted on DG: those .. are still full property of the photographer.

I agree, even if you post it publicly, no one has the right to publish it without your permission. The photographer always retains the copyright, unless you sell it or give it away.
Now people just using your public pic for a screensaver or wallpaper on their desktop, that's fine. But even then, I feel good when someone says they are using it and thanks me.
No matter where you post it, it is still you pic. I love to post my pics on Daves and have several businesses contact me wanting to use my pic. I am flattered and dont mind, particularly if they ask. One was for a book and so I asked to be given credit and a copy of the book. Which I did recieve. the other was for an online nursery. I gave them permission and did not ask for anything, but next thing I knew, there was a huge box of bulbs at my door. It pays to post.
Coolness, Lisa.
Voss, I always ask for credit on my photo. Just fun to have my name on them out there in webland. But if it is for a money making business, I ask for money. And I usually get it. If they do not want to pay, they can find another photo.
Edited to say that is not always true. It depends. A nice lady asked me to use some pics on ebay and I said OK but she was a member here and after I looked at her auctions and feedback and her posts here I felt OK to let her use them. After she offered some cool morning glories but I dropped the ball and got sidetracked, as I usually do. One day I might get it together to email her.
