New to gardening any comments welcome

I tried a couple of tomatoes in the ground last year but lost them right away to frost. This year I have built a small 12x 15 hoop house hoping for some better luck. I close it up early evening and open it up every morning by 7am. Yesterday everything looked fine (growing everything in containers with potting soil, have a terrible underground critter problem) but when I checked about 6pm my tomatoes and my pepper looked as though they had burned. I water in the mornings. Can anyone help me, I really don't know what I'm doing.

HI oregonmom! welcome to gardening! You will learn so much here at Dave's! I'm pretty new too, and I love it here! It sounds like they are getting a little too hot to me. In a z6b I would think. If they are potted they may need more water, also. Maybe twice a day. Pots are going to get hotter and drier faster. How low are your overnite lows? They should be ok without the hoophouse now.

I would just like to say have fun. I'm trying all sorts of ways to grow things, different pots, different grow mediums, new seeds, various methods for starting seeds etc. It's fun :)

I'm way down here in MS so don't know what your temps are like up there. Are they still pretty cool during the day? It could be your plants are getting too much temp change when you open your hoop house in the morning. Were the plants completely burned looking or just the tips? If it was just the tips, I would try carefully pruning the affected parts off to see if the rest of the plant will continue to grow (nothing to lose).

Hi Oregonmom,

welcome to Dave's. I spent a lot of time in Klamath as a kid, love it there.

I have a hard time thinking that your plants would be burned in Oregon...when you are watering, are you getting a lot of water on the leaves? What size pots are things in and how big are they?

I am definitely not a tomato or pepper proffessional but I have done ok with them. You might want to do some reading in the tomatoe forum as well.

Can you give us pics?

Thanks to everyone for your resoponses and help, my night temps are low 40's right now, last few days have gotten up to 80. I do believe that they are getting to hot. I water twice a day because they dry out fast in the pots. I have pulled them out of the hoop house and they are doing much better, I think the pepper will be 100% better, not so sure about the tomatoes though, will wait and see. Thanks again everyone, I love Dave's Garden.

Keep them outside until weather gets colder and then put them in at night/ Maybe day if the temps are low and windy. They should do better out but be sure to water everyday or two. It is very dry here and I am watering everyday or so to keep them all looking good. One is filled up with green tomatoes now. Hope to have a ripe one in a couple of weeks.....gn

Try things each year until you get things going your way. I have tried lots of things over the years and found what works best for me........Gn
