So many snails

Katy, TX

I've noticed alot of snails since spring. What damage can they do to a lawn?

Ayrshire Scotland, United Kingdom

To a lawn, NONE, however, if you have leaves, litter, etc lying about on your lawn, then they will use this as hiding places and egg laying.
if the birds dont feed on these snails, then be sure as eggs are eggs, they will go feed on your plants, especialy Hostas, Delphiniums and anything else with SOFT FLESHY GROWTH, woody type shrubs are not a food however they can and do hibernate in the leaves of these.
If you want rid of the snails, either go out with gloves and bucket of warm water and gather up, drop in bucket and drown them, OR use slug killer from Garden center, use ones that dont harm birds or other animals OR children. you will never get rid of all, but you will reduce the damage that they do, spring is the time they come out of hibernation and have huge appetites and even less care of what plants they will damage. happy hunting and good luck. There is a natural product called diotomateous earth. It is crushed seacorals and other hardshelled sea creatures. it is a white powder and it cuts up their soft sliminess. It also works on other soft bodied insects. After it cuts them, the powder absorbs their moisture which sucks their innard out. Sounds like mutilating fun, eh?
MH WAH AH AH! (evil laugh)

Salt doesn't do much good to the soil. Give the kids a mission -- of an evening, send them outside with a salt shaker. Much more fun than video games!
