Need suggestions for a fast growing vine to cover lattice that will offer shade to a propane tank. Whatever kind of vine it is, it will need to tolerate sun from 10 am until dusk on the west side where the sun will be blazing all summer (most summer days average 96). Star jasmine did well there last year but died overwinter from frost. We usually have 20 to 30 days in winter with temps dipping into the 20s at night (though not consecutive nights) with a few in the teens. One year we did over a week with daytime highs between 14 and 20. Ridiculous for the Gulf Coast really. I welcome any suggestions. Blooms are nice, but not a must.
Need suggestions for fast growing vine
If you like morning glory, that will do the job. Some folks don't. I planted "Heavenly Blue this year to cover meters and cable lines and such. I haven't got in trouble with utiliy companies YET! I could always say " I dunno, it just came up there!
If you don't want ever greens then you could have a Parthenocissus, no blooms of any significance but very handsome foliage, fast growing and gorgeous autumn colours ranging from bright red, crimson, purple, orange, yellow.
Another one is humulus lupulus; again no significant flowers but beautiful foliage (specially in the cultivar 'aurea') and very charming hops in the fall.
If you ever considered brewing beer that one of it important ingredients.
Then the fasted grower I know of is Fallopia aubertii, its growth is baffling! It has beautiful white blooms.
You could try pole beans and get the added bonus of some tasty food! They'll grow up to 8' high on your lattice.
I had some dwarf Firethorn Pyracantha growing up a chimney on the west side of my house in Atlanta. Full sun on bricks made the area hot enough to bake bread. But this really thrived in the afternoon heat when everything else was wilting. The green leaves with red berries were also a plus in late fall and winter.
Parthenocissus tricuspidata is a clinging vine and grows best on brick. Fire thorn (Pyracantha) is actually a woody shrub that gets espaliered onto a trellis. It doesn't cling or twine. The best fast growing vines are the annual vines. they are twining vines and grow quickly. Of course, in Fla., you won't have to worry about them dying in the winter. But, I'm not sure if they would peter out with the heat.
Some to try...
Thunbergia (Black eyed susan)
Morning glory- many colours to choose from and you can mix up different colours on the same trellis.
Sweet peas-again, many colours.
Hope that helps
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I will do some research to see which I will try. I had actually thought of runner beans, but decided it was too late in the season.
