I bought my first Tibouchina last year & the first frost killed it (I thought). It is coming back this spring and I trimmed it down after I noticed the new growth. Am I supposed to cut it back before the winter? How far? Just cover it? Tips? I enjoyed this plant so much last year I bought 3 more this year. I live in Mobile, AL. Yes, we do get below 32 deg F in the winter but we usually warm up above it during the day.
Tibouchina (glory bush): when to cut it back?
I wouldn't cut it back until you start to see new growth in the spring--what's there during the winter can help protect the rest of the plant from frost damage. You may want to try covering them for the winter so that they don't die back--I've found when mine have got zapped by a bad frost and have to start over, they are a bit late to get going in the spring and often don't get big enough that year to really put on a good show, here most years they won't die back so occasionally having to start from the ground up isn't that bad, but if yours are going to die back every winter you may never get to enjoy their full glory unless you protect them.
