How do I find where the seeds are on Vinca's and Nasturims? I want to learn how to grow my flowers from seeds from my own flowers, but I don't even know where to look for the seeds and how to harvest them.
how to find seeds on the plants
I don't know about the nastursiums, but I find that the vincas will seed themselves into the garden. It takes a bit longer to grow to maturity, but I love seeing the seedlings appear in the spring.
Good question Lorraine...I was wondering myself. I guess each plant is different??? Maybe there is a book that tells where the seeds are for each flower?? Any comments, Oh Elders of the Gardens?
The seeds will form right where the flowers were, what they look like will be different depending on what the flower was. I would look up your plants in Plant Files, sometimes people post pictures of what the seeds look like. Some plants may not set seed, some hybrid cultivars are sterile and won't make seeds, and on some plants the seeds may be very small and hard to collect.
Hi LoraineR, it is not too hard to find the seed capsules that contain the seeds, but as stated before, they are all different from one plant type to the next and as before, some FI hybrids dont set seeds that will germinate and if they do, will look totaly different from the parent plant, however, on saying all that, seed gathering is very enjoyable once you know what you are doing.
For Nastursiams, once the flower is over, within a few days, you will see a little swollen capsule, somtimes a cluster on the one flower, you must wait till this is fully developed, (you will note that it has changed colour to papery brown) that is when you will collect the seed HEADS, pull them off and dry them on a peace of Kitchen paper, the kind for mopping up spills, once they are dry, gently ease the little capsule apart , and the (BLACK) seeds will spill out, sometimes brown depending on the colour of the flower it came from, it is the same with most plants, the capsule will vary in shape, size and colour, but the drying and colecting from the capsules is the same, some seeds are so tiny that it will look like sand, others are larger and like calandula, are long and thin and have a little tail, most DAISY flowers have a tail, but the principal is same, when it comes to BULBS, you are looking in the same place, but the seeds are held in more a POD shape, once this swells and dries, (TAKES LONGER THAN ROOTED FLOWERS) then you split the pod, and the seeds will be evident, some look like a line of seeds stuck together and you have to seperate them and dry them the same way as before, but with bulbs, you may find that it it easier to gently lift the bulb after all the greenery has died down and the bulbs have developed there own little bulblet's so you plant them up and it could take anything from one year to three years before it reaches flowering maturity, but with bulb seeds, even longer, some lilies have the little bulblet's on the stem just at the leaf axel, usually black, you just pinch them off and plant in a pot, in about 2 to 3 years you have a bulb ready for flowering.
This is only a rough guide as to how to get the seeds you want, when to plant them and how long to germinate is different from plant type to plant, IF you get along to your librery, look out for books on propagation/ germinating seeds etc, this will give you ideas to help you further. Remember nature plays a part and you wont always get the same colour etc as the insects can cross pollinate and mix colours for you but they wont cross one plant strain with another, ie a rose with a tulip.
GOOD LUCK, WeeNel.
Once again, WeeNel, you have explained what could be a very daunting task into its easiest form. Thank you. For all who are trying to find the seed pods, or for those who know what to look for, but not what to do with them, you made it seem quite easy....well maybe not easy, but not as intimidating as all the scientific and technical tomes describe the process.
Thanks to all of you. Weenel, you made it easy. Thanks. I've been picking off the dead flowers. So I guess I should leave them until the seed turns brown and shows up? I just love harvesting them even if it's hard to do. Sounds like I don't have enough to do.
Anyway, thanks a lot
LorraineR
