Uses for old baking soda

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I use baking soda to deodorize fridge & freezer. I replace quarterly. Wondering if anybody know whether there are any gardening ways to reuse the old baking soda. I normally pour it down the drains, but I would prefer a gardening application. I just sent Arm & Hammer an email, but thought I would post here, since there are some many in-the-know folk on this website.

thanks for your help

Would it still be ok to spray garden plants to prevent mildew? I'm thinking it would be.....

About the only thing I can find for used baking soda is to pour it down the drain and/or garbage disposal to deoderize them.

Voss, I will make a paste of baking soda and water for bee stings and fire ant bites. It really helps.

It also works well on Powdery Mildew: 4 tbsp baking soda, 2 tbsp Murphy's Oil soap, and 1 gal water.

Don't know about old baking soda, but I have used it for over 40 yrs. for an under arm deodorant. Works like a charm. LIZ

Well, since you didn't Google, I did. These links were on the first page. I "googled" garden uses for baking soda.

hi darius. thanks. I did google it. But I entered "applications for old baking soda"; "reusing baking soda". It didn't yield much.

Also, since I know you can't use it for cooking, I wondered if the effectiveness of remedies would be as good as with a fresh box of B. soda.

Vos... I didn't mean to be so snippy... I'm in the middle of a gall bladder attack and nothing seems right.

Not sure why you'd want to specifically use it in the garden.

Its great to breakup clogged drains. Sprinkle about a 1/2- 1 c. baking soda around the sink basin. Boil about a quart of water with about 1 cup of distilled vinegar. Pour the boiling mixture directly into the sink over the baking soda, slowly. It seethes and foams goes down the drain and takes all the gunk with it.

I use it directly on a sponge to clean kitchen and bathroom surfaces

Careful about using it as an underarm deorderant... it can badly damage delicate fabrics.

Throw a little into the washing machine with towels and sheets... freshens and cleans better.

you can sprinkle it on the carpet before you vacuum and it will deodorize that too.

And if you have a boy pumpkin going through puberty, throw some in the washer with his clothes to eliminate the STRONG musky odors!! Hope no male is hurt nor harm nor offended, but the boy pumpkin reeks of strong skunky stenches, especially after biking and playing basketball! ;0)
