My sister just planted some flowers in a strawberry jar, and was having problems with the soil coming out when she watered. Is there a way of fixing this without having to repot it(I suggested putting a clear bag in the jar, filling with dirt, then cutting holes for the plants)? We thought maybe getting some sort of mossy stuff to stick in the holes...what do you think? Or, could it be once the root systems fill in it'll hold it in place? She planted sedum in it... Thanks
Planting in Strawberry Jar
Hi Kis, My daughter-in -law had the same problem as your sister at watering time with her jar, I think you are on the right track with it sorting itself out once the roots fill out a bit, I used one of those jars to plant herbs so I did'nt have far to walk to pick herbs, but I found they dry out really quickly and gave up, ended planting succulents as they did not need so much watering, however what my Daughter-in-law did was, get a watering can with a long thin spout, no nozzle, (like for indoor plants) and she started at the bottom hole, poked the thin spout in the hole and got less mess with soil that way, watering from the top seems to create the problem, she did it at night also as the plants take in the water better, AND she got a nice crop of Strawberry's, so give that a go till the roots fill out, remember the plants will need feeding as they are competing with each other with little soil, hope this helps and good luck.
WeeNel.
I have sedum planted in my strawberry pot and although the soil comes out some when I water, the plant continues to grow and bloom each year.
Mine gets so large the planter is almost totally covered.
Thanks guys for the help! WeeNel, I will tell her to try watering from the bottom up. Gloribe, I bet your planting looks great! I'll tell my sister not to worry if the soil does fall out....I don't know if she was worried about the plants or just didn't want a mess(she's in an apartment on the second floor with a small balcony). Thanks again!

hi guys, this is my first post, im a newbie! i have been looking all over the place for strawberry tips. i recently bought a beautiful full-grown plant abundant with big strawberries...(had never heard of a strawberry planter)...i re-potted in a nice ceramic pot(hanging). the plant seems to be thriving, but after i allowed my 4 year-old daughter to eat the berries; none have since returned!...i asked around and found out about the "planter"...so, i re-potted again. i did notice some soil washing, but i thought it was ok since the leaves and plant itself seemed healthy.
im keeping it watered and it's in full-sun; but the days have been very hot and humid here in mississippi....does anyone know how to promote my berries to return? i have been spraying with miracle-gro bloom-booster...but the strawberries had disappeared before i started that. i would appreciate any advice. thank you!
If it is packed well and you just water from the top, the water should flow thru and dampen the rest, but not wash it out. You can also use a PVC pipe with holes drilled in it, fill with pebbles , place standing up right in the center of the pot with an inch of room at the top, then fill the jar around it with the soil, or, use Evenflo open bottles stacked in the same way. Then you water in the PVC or open bottle and the water flows more evenly thru the whole jar. I just water from the top and never have a problem though. If I try watering the individual pockets, that is when I have run off.
There are everbearing strawberries, and there are once-bearing, usually called June bearing.
