Miniatures and dwarfs...

Does anyone grow dwarf or miniature plants?

What tiny plants do you grow?

What got you started on miniatures?

Why?

Midway, TX(Zone 8b)

I grow a few dwarf or miniatures. I like my shorter dahlias- don't have to stake. My dwarf Mexican Petunias do real well. I love my shorter canna Tropical Pink. The shorter Profussion Zinnias are also a favorite of mine.

Let's hear it for the 'shorties'. ;)

Well, I wish I had a camera that would take better photos of little plants/blooms. I have a "shorter" yellow canna. It was given to me and I don't know a name or even have a photo...

My Mom gave me some of her dwarf Iris too. They bloom later than the standard Iris but weather is so odd I am not sure I will see them bloom this spring. They are delicate and a pretty purple.

I traded with BigRed and got this tiny Scutellaria with miniscule flowers. This plant is in a four inch pot. It takes stronger glasses than I have but it is definitely a skullcap.

But, I have to admit this one is the plant that made me wonder if anyone else likes small plants.

A few years ago I was given seeds for a "dwarf cleome". This cleome only gets 6-8 inches tall. I keep it in a pot so it doesn't get lost. Its' blooms have a sharp smell like peas. The blooms are a delicate pink/white and will turn to little pea pods. It delights me every year. It has already offered up the first bloom (upper left hand corner). I love it and wonder what other miniatures or dwarfs or shorties are out there.

Thanks Vossner ~ I thought there would be more of us that like the little guys.

I like them in pots so I don't have to get on my knees to see and smell them. I was given a miniature rose but it didn't live to tell it. I have an aversion to all things thorny. It must have sensed the subliminal messages... : /

i have a small orange tree smiles

Now that would be neat! A friend gave me some kumquats. I loved them and wonder how small the tree would be...

I think CJ in the woodlands grows dwarf crape myrtles.

Dwarf Crape Myrtles? How small would they be?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

lookie here http://www.crapemyrtles.com/

I don't have 1st hand experience w/ this company, but I've definitely been tempted.

How cool are they! Sized from 8 inches to 36 inches. It is hard to imagine the magnificent crape that tiny. Those could be kept in pot and moved around to suit whereever you needed a splash of color. Neat!

not what I'd call glowing reviews in the watchdog. But if I could find a place in my garden to showcase a mini (which I don't) I wouldn't hesitate to try them out.

Whew! I think I would have to pass on that one but surely they aren't the only grower/seller... Maybe?

Oh boy! Miniature succulents ~ now that could be a passion! Nice collection Tapla. Where on earth have you tracked those down?

Podster my dwarf Crepe Myrtles are about 2 1/2 to 3 ft. tall. They bloom real well.

About the Mex. Petunias, I don't know the botanical name for the dwarf ones. I sure like mine. I have had the taller ones too but the wind whips them around too much. The tall ones don't seem to bloom all that well for me either.

Dancey ~ are the dwarf Ruellias Katie? http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/38186/index.html If so, I have these also and have a few of these that bloom in white also.

Midway, TX(Zone 8b)

Yes it is Podster. I have seeds for white and pink. I just haven't been able to get them planted yet.

I've had a real setback this spring. Broken bone in my leg with surgery and all that stuff so I'm just now able to do some things.
