My kousa is in its second season. It is currently in bloom, but the blossoms are much smaller than others in my neighborhood.Would it be wise to prune some of the less productive branches?
kousa dogwood
Hi Debarnes the Kousa is one of the larger shrubby dogwoods and has lovely flowers, with strawberry shaped fruit in the winter, is your soil wet enough, and getting the right light, nice rich moist soil being most important, next time you are wandering around the neighbourhood, have a look to see what kind of light the others have, even if they are in some shade, the other dogwwoods that get the bright coloured stems prefere shade but your one likes a bit if sun to harden the wood and helps the berry's. maybe they just need some manure dug into the soil, helps feed and keeps moisture, how old are the others in the neighbourhood, they might be more mature, I know that the other shrubby dogwoods need to be pruned hard back in early spring to produce the bright stems that they are grown for, but I am not too sure how hard you prune yous, if at all, maybe ask at the place you got it from incase you ruin it, or ask the neighbours. hope this helps a bit.
WeeNel.
