Hey everyone!!
I have just learned something from the neighbors', I have planted numerous bouganvillas (sp) and they are all doing quite well. Full of blooms of various colors. Each morning, or evening after work, I notice that the wild chickens have scratched all around many different plants in the yard including the bogeys.....not to mention my Lab constantly running through the Ficus hedges on the fence line, kicking out rocks and dirt and limiting a few of my Hibiscus from growing.
I thought of laying down chicken wire in all the places needed to keep the dirt in place and chix and dogs in theirs but would need over 100 feet of it. Since everything on an island is rather pricey, the neighbors told me about Logwood. It is a tree that grows in the bush, is quite thick and has needle sharp spikes on it every couple of inches. They said to head into the bush, cut branches off and lay them on the areas where I would use the wire. The locals used and still use it for this purpose and is quite effective. I have just finished laying the first batch of short pieces, 2-3 feet in length and will monitor the situation. Not sure how effective it is against Iguanas but hopefully it will work on the chickens....Free and Effective!!!
The female trees are spikeless and the male trees are simply covered with spikes, about the size of the thorns on a rose or bogey!!!

Poor man's chicken wire
Excellent idea ~ we have a locust tree that I abhor. It would work the same but I would probably be the first victim. LOL
Too right....I said some bad words just cutting it to put in place.....if my Lab could talk, he said almost the exact words to me.....for that i am sorry, but i say let the chickens cuss!!!
aurabest,
john
