Unknown Plant Types

Richmond, KY(Zone 6a)

I have two different types of plants that I have no idea what are. The first one is a palm. It's leaves split in two halves from the base, has jagged edges, and two-toned green stripes. They look like a fan that has been split in two. The other plant I absolutely no idea what type it is. The leaves are dark green with orange bases (stalks). It sends up runners with many seed pods on them. I am going to collect some of these seeds and see if I can get them to grow! I realize I am not giving you guys very much info on these plants, but I hope someone will know what I am talking about. Thanks in advance for any help!

Any chance of some pictures as that will let everyone know the size etc you are talking about so the plants can be identified.

Could your palm be Chamaerops humilis- European Fan Palm?

I don't know about the runners with seedpods part, but the description of orange base with dark green leaves sounds likes Chlorophytum 'Fireflash'

Thanks for the responses. Sorry, I have not been able to get pictures of them; I don't have a decent camera. The second one is the Sierra Leone Lily! I am still looking at many pictures for the comparison of the palm - I still have not found one that looks close enough. I basically want to know what they are so that I can take care of them properly. These plants, as well as most of my other plants were bought at reduced prices on clearance. Most of them were not in the best condition when I bought them. Some of the plants had no tags for identification and/or care information.

I finally figured out that my palm was a fish tail palm. I had terrible trouble trying to figure it out, especially for how common they are. Can they really get 30 feet tall? Any special suggestions for it being an indoor plant in KY?

I've never seen a Fish Tail Palm quite as tall as 30' but they do get tall! They are really nice Palms!

Are you certain that the first plant you speak of *is* a palm?

It's the 'two-toned green stripes' part of your description that makes me wonder.

Granted, there are variegated fishtail palms (among others) out there, but they're hard to find (usually have to buy from a specialty nursery) and usually very expensive.

Apartmentplant: Could your "Palm" possibly be a Jungle Drum? I've been trying to figure out what it is and I have a Jungle Drum Plant that kinda sorta sounds like your description. Here's the link to plant files for this plant and a pic of mine: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/72394/ Take a look at some of these pic's in PF and see if it might be what you have. Mine is small yet, and doesn't have the jagged edges.

Here's a close up of the leaves on mine. They kinda look like the fan split in two.

No, it definately looks like some variety of the fishtail palm, but I'm not sure it's the variety that the link was provided for. While researching, I found out that there are many different varieties! Even in the pictures in the link the leaves have lighter and darker green stripes, mine is like that, but not variagated. I think the original price was $7.99, I bought mine on clearance for around two dollars.

I sure am curious to see what that palm looks like .... sounds really nice! Not variegated but with the stripes - I bet it's really pretty! I would love to find one like that ... the original price of $7.99 sounds really great and you got it for two bucks??!! Wow! Lucky find!

If you ever get the proper ID, please let us know what it is! Sounds like a really nice plant!
