Hello,
I'm new to the forum and hope someone can help me. I've had a couple of ivy geraniums in a plastic hanging basket for about a year, and it was overcrowded, so I decided to move them to a large window box I have. When I took the plants out of the basket I noticed some white colored deposit in the soil and among the roots. I'm not sure if it is salt build-up or some type of fungus..? The plants look good and are growing really well.
I'm attaching 2 pictures of it, and hope them help.
Thanks in advance,
masciam
White thing in geranium roots
Hi Musciam, I cant see from the pic, it could be left over feed from last year, it could be wrong water regeme as in, too much at one point then left to over dry, so what I would be inclined to do is, remove as much of the soil from the roots as you can, (even wash soil off in a bucket of water) look see if the roots close to the plant are OK, if so, trim off the damaged roots till you get to good roots, GENTLY, if you think it is ok, replant in NEW soil, Ivy Geraniums are easy to root if you have to really cut the roots away so long as you get rid of the bad roots, IF you do this, before replanting, remove any flower heads to let the plant grow new roots instead of working hard to make flowers, they will soon flower again in about four weeks I would think.
dont over water for a wekk or so till the plants settle down then give them a liquid feed of something like tomato food, half strength.
Good luck.
