Dinner on someone elses dime is almost as good as having enough money to treat others :-)

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I got a manicure for my 1st jeopardy audition - there's a guy at the salon who is totally thrilled every time I come in, just knowing I went from there to a jeopardy audition - I'm a celebrity in that salon! I've tried out twice but I am forgetting things I knew faster than I am learning new things at this point. I was on a local TV show for kids when I was 5 or 6! Not really as much of a celebrity as Martha's DH, though.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Martha, I'm very impressed. not many get to the $125,000 question, let alone get it right. there was a time I thought I might do well on one of these shows, but not any more. the knowledge is still in there somewhere...retrieving it is a problem.

Carrie, good for you for auditioning. We have a lot of very bright people on this forum (including Victor, obviously, or I wouldn't tease you!)

We must have similar minds, Victor (wow, now that's scary LOL). English was also a very strong subject for me. So the SAT's were a breeze for me and I wound up a Merit Scholar. If it had been history & science, not so much.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I was a Merit Scholar, too. Which shocked the poop out of my career counselor who said that I "wasn't college material". Took me 15 years - but I did get through college and had great adventures on the way. (And for that coulselor - missed a straight A in my major by 1 B+. ) :o~~

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I went to college on a full academic scholarship. Was top of my HS class (I used to be somebody!) and graduated college just shy of 3.9. Earned a free trip to Columbia Engineering Graduate School but did not go - long story.

Carrie, if you don't mind my asking, how much was left of the 32K after the taxman got his share?? At least it was a cash prize so you can pay the tax. I feel sorry for people who win large non-cash prizes and then have to come up with the scratch to pay the tax. Usually end up selling what they won.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

that's great Martha... I can't do jeopardy... too much thinking in English... I am lazy...

Good for you Victor and Yank! and Gram.... I know I hang around smart people...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thank you Kass. Unfortunately, senility is already setting in. And so is senility.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Yeah. I used to be able to trust what I remembered to be true. Foggier these days.

In HS & college, I never tried too hard. Too busy with less productive activities. Still I managed to surprise a lot of people with my grades. My career has been very different. I joke around a lot (that must take you by surprise) but I'm very committed.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You should be committed.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

You both should be committed :-)

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

I'd like to be committed. I could use the rest. Where do these plants keep coming from? I plant every day, but there is always more. Do you people leave stuff on my patio at night? I rarely buy anything and didn't have that much success with my wintersowing. My gardens all look empty. And yet I keep planting. what's the deal here?? I think I have this same, long, odd dream every spring.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Did you ever see 'The Bishop's Wife' with Cary Grant? Remember the part where the bottle of Sherry keeps refilling itself, no matter how many drinks are poured?? That's how I feel with gardening sometimes - especially around now.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

What $32,000? Oh, you mean Martha, I believe. I NEVER win ANYTHING. Well, Monopoly.

My second cousin, Chris Lamont, and I attended the same private pre-prep school. There was a raffle to which we had each bought tickets. The drawing happened to be on my birthday. So they pick the ticket, peer at it for a while, then announce "C. Lamont!" I am flabbergasted. As I begin to make way through the cheering (or were they jeering) throngs to receive my prize, they say "no, wait, it's, it's, it's Chris Lamont!" Then I sat down. That's the closest I've ever come.

I've been in two lawsuits, and in both I was advised by the lawyers to settle. Not like in the John Grisham books at all!

Gram, I have that long, odd dream too! And it's recurring! Maybe we're twin sisters separated at conception or before? Twins, born different years on different days to different parents? I was born in Philadelphia, if that helps.

Okay - for those of you interested in the weird - I once won 6065 pennies by "guessing" the number of pennies in a glass container.

The only thing was - I didn't guess - I was told the number. I swear . . . I was 9 years old at the time. We were at the Pacific National Exibition in Vancouver. A local credit union had a promotion display with the glass container filled with pennies.

My father insisted that there must be at least 12,000 pennies in the jar, but I said, "no, there couldn't be that much." THEN I realized what I had done - I had talked back to my father, something I had NEVER done before and I was lucky we were in public, because I am sure he would have used severe physical punishment otherwise.

However, under the circumstances, all he could do was demand that if I was such a "smarty-pants" maybe I could tell him how many pennies there were. That's when I was told there were exactly 6065.

Now, I consider myself to be a fairly rational person. I do not have ANY explanation I can offer - but 6065 was the exact number. My mom told me to enter and use that number (For decades, I never told anyone about being told the number; my parents still don't know). Anyway, the next closest guess was apparently 6064.

So - I won $60.65, a lot of money to a 9 year old. Got my picture in the Credit Union newsletter. I bought a mouse-trap game - which never worked very well, and the rest went into the bank. My parents eventually "borrowed" the balance so the family could drive from BC to Ontario to meet relatives.

Not to appear ungrateful, but I would rather have won a super-lottery lol

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Wait, your Mom told you to say 6065? Who told you? Michaela, you're not making sense.
I said something rude and un-american which got censored.
Anyway, I'm glad you won. I'm not sure about $60.65 being a lot of money - wait, Canadian dollars or US dollars?

xxx, Carrie

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Canadian dollars. The Voice was not associated with any physical body. so, needless to say, hearing voices is usually not a good sign (according to Harry Potter b ook number 2). But I swear, it is the truth.

I cannot explain it. I do not expect you to believe it - but that is what happened.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

good for you Michaela.... the only thing I ever won (now that I think of it) was an ipod shuffle .... not that I use a lot... is just like my cell phone... I want to win a compost tumbler or some other gardening thing.... like MONEY!!!! lol!!!!!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

All I can say is wow.

x, C

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Where are you kids getting these Daves Tee shirts, or is it too late?

Hey, b-day present from DH, I got a TRIPOD! and a MACRO LENS for the film camera! Is that love or what?

xxx, Carrie

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Wow! what a sweet guy! That is love, for sure :-)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That's great. But what's film??

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Well, I can use the tripod with the digital camera also, you know! Don't be a party pooper!

xx, C

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Actually, I've seen those.

x, C

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Victor! You're great! I gotta get me one of those! My tripod sits in the closet, getting dusty because I don't want to get it out and fiddle with it. My son likes to run around with it and pretend it's a machine gun.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Good thing it's not the opposite. Talk about 'getting the shot'!!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

You are sharp tonight, Victor lol

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yeah, but everyone has a victor so what's the big deal?? Sigh........

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Not everyone - why hardly anyone in BC has a Victor.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

But I don't have a BC either. Or do I?? Harper, if you want that tripod - do a search and shop around.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

BC = British Columbia.

"Victor" isn't a common name there.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I knew - I was just thinking what else it might stand for. Hmmmmmm.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Man, I have never known you to be stumped, before. You must be tired from a long day working in the gardens!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Well, if this helps at all, and I hope it does, you are the only person I know named Victor. How's that???

Mwah, kisses!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

In fact, I don't know any non-humans named Victor, either. You're one of a kind, baby! Feel better?

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

At my house BC stands for that distant, cloudy era in my life known as Before Children. One trash can, free time, three loads of laundry per week, whatever I wanted to eat for dinner!
Martha

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

BC..... BC..... whatever you want for dinner..... one trash can..... sounds amazing!! Do you thing it'll ever be that way again? (trying to remember if there really was a BC. concluding itt is a myth.)

xxxx, Carrie

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Carrie, even I remember BC. It's the EN (empty nest) that I thought was a myth. For a while I thought the deal was 'they leave, then come back with more people'. My son got married, moved back in with wife (2 people), had baby #1 (3 people), moved out, moved back in to save for house, oops pregnant again, baby #2 (4 people). thank goodness we only had 1 kid or we could have had dozens of people moving in and out. in between baby #1 & baby #2, my niece moved in so she could finish nursing school, but she did not multiply.

BUT...there is hope...we moved LOL. thought about leaving no forwarding address. we actually did have a nephew who wanted to move in after that (with wife & 1 baby) but we took down the 'open house' sign. some days we have a big lunch and skip dinner altogether if we want. we put food in the fridge and it's still there when we want to eat it. hang in there! your time will come again :0)

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Ah . . . Here is a quick trick for avoiding yo-yo kids. Move to another country. My kids can come visit - but they can't stay without a work visa!

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

I'd love to have an EN (empy nest)! Right now I want to be out in the garden but there is a baby in the next room screaming in his crib cause he doesn't want to take a nap. Just as soon as he is asleep I'll take the monitor and go out, but I usually wait until he is asleep for his morning nap. My kids left after college but one leaves her child with me every day to raise. She isn't home enough to do that herself. My house is full of baby things again!!! It's quiet so I'm outa here!!! Bye!!
