i bought three pink knockout and the tag says a height of 4 feet and width 3 feet wide. I wanted to have them really close. How close can I have them together and do I prune these bushes.

To space plants properly, be sure that the distance from the center of one plant to the center of the next plant is equal to one half the mature spread of each plant.
Since you are planting the same kind of plants and know their mature width is 3' then measuring from the center of each plant you should have 3'.
This link will give you more info. Don't you just love the Knockout roses?

I have 2 KnockOuts that I have planted in the ground each in front of a trellis. Although it likes to spread horizontally, I just take those and tie them vertically. No pruning needed until blooming time is done as they bloom on new wood. They're pretty much trouble free. I do occasionally prune mine after a spent bloom to encourage more vertical growth.
