What flowers will withstand a light frost?

Honeoye, NY(Zone 5a)

Hi, technically I'm in 5a, but in an area that gets frost later than the stats show. I'm in the same zone as Rochester NY, but on cold clear nights it drops 10-15 d. colder than Roch., and I may get a few frosts yet this spring.

Can anyone give me a brief list of popular annuals that won't be bothered by a light frost?

TIA!

Pansies and violas are great...they will bloom all winter here. Should do great for you all summer. Petunias and snapdragons can tolerate some cold too, but not as much as the first two.

I thought all annuals weren't very frost hardy, I guess that's why they call them annuals.
But I did plant some poppy anemones that were supposed to be planted in the spring, because they weren't hardy for my winter, but it was too late, I already soaked them and planted last fall. They came up twice this last winter and died then it warmed up and they came up again, we had a week long freeze and they stayed green and had beautiful blooms this spring.Even though most of trees and other flowers got frozen. I really think you just have to experiment. The micro-climates around your house, yard etc. have something to do with it also.

An annual is a plant that completes it's life cycle in 1 year. From seed planted, to seed harvested....thus, the term 'annual'.

Some plants tolerate cold better than others...and folks will set them out for extra early color before they plant their main gardens.

Poppies like cool weather, but I don't think they tolerate freezes well....I don't have much luck with them here. They have such a small window of perfect growing weather. It's either too cold or too hot for them.
