I planted phlox bulbs about three weeks ago, and as of yet there is nothing popping out of the ground. Is this usual?
When do phlox start to bloom
I haven't planted phlox bulbs but lots of others take at least 3 weeks to peak through. Maddening isn't it:-)
Thank you 81302, this is my first year planting bulbs. I guess I'll just have to practice patience. Can't wait to se the little darlings peaking back at me.
i planted some in march(had a freeze) as of now my glads are sprouted to over a foot w/ no blooms- i had that asiatic lily bloom & die(the flower not the plant) ,i have some taller but no blooms,i have alyssum blooming & a pink something coming in - like i said before, i spread seeds for everything & everything is growing but no flowers yet & looking like weeds to me ( i really love tactical planted flowers or plants w/ the mulch..less is more.lss(long story short) i planted phlox & it's growing but no flowers yet... i'm sure it will come in.i'll awnd pics as soon as something blossoms again- rain tonight then sun tomorrow so something will grow a foot & blossom...
thanks for the encourgagment, gypsyseagod, I planted my glads and liatris bulbs at the same time as I did the phlox and none of them are showing through the dirt yet. Maybe they know more than me because the weather has been kind of fickle. Hot one day then cool the next, although we have had a nice bit of rain. Cool nights too so maybe the time is just not right for them to come up yet. I keep checking on them. My flower garden is kinda like my baby, just want to do things the best i can so they grow up strong and healthy.
Hang in there Julie123. I agree with gypsyseagod that something will come in.
Some things bloom up to 6 weeks later the first year that they are planted. Not sure if this applies specifically to bulbs but know some of mine have been later and this year with the exceptionally fickle weather some of my established bulbs have been slower to break ground and things that normally are blossoming by now still aren't even close.
. Weather has such an effect on things in garden. Need extra water in spring if don't get enough rain but they don't want to be too soggy either or can rot in the ground. Some cold snaps can mean end up with no blossoms or twisted leaves. So much not under our control. Sometimes they don't like the soil their in or getting too much shade or unhappy with fertilizer or lack there of. Occasionally a bulb won't even blossom the first year but be gorgeous the next. Most of the time they will do just fine though. We northerners are so anxious to see beauty that it is difficult to be patient. You could plant some early annuals such as pansies in front of the planting if have room and that way have something pretty to look at right now while waiting for the bulbs to blossom. It is sort of like waiting for a pot to boil. Best to have a distraction. Can really relate though because I started caladiums inside and look at them almost daily to see which ones are peaking through.
Again, just hang in there.
The wait will be worth it once you see them blossom:-)
It's funny you mentioned pansies,81302. I planted pansies last year (just for some color to look at until the other plants began to bloom and they are pretty) and all of them came up this year again. I thought annuals were only good for one year. So I was surprised when they blossomed again, just as colorfull as last year. I guess I got my money's worth out of that flat. And your right about us northerners, we look at white for so long that we just itch to see some color.
That is awesome that your pansies came back this year Julie 123!!! Lots of our annuals are perennials in warmer climates and some aren't but self seed. I know of people who have had the same thing happen with petunias. I have never been that lucky but keep hoping. I deadhead a lot to keep the blooms going and then pull my annuals at end of season so I don't give mine a good chance to do that. You got me thinking I should probably just leave them go at end of season and hope for a return.
