advice on good landscaping books for the PNW

Portland, OR

We are about to move into a house with 3/4 acre yard that has very little landscaping on it - a blank canvas - I can hardly wait to get started! I will probably consult a landscape architect, but would love to know what landscaping books are recommended for the pacific northwest. Can anyone recommend one or two or more?

thanks

My favorites are the Ann Lovejoy books. I have several of them and she's easy to read, lives here in Washington and takes a very organic approach to gardening and landscaping. I'd suggest requesting a few of her books from the library first to see if you like her style before purchasing them. I think my favorite is her 'gardening handbook'.
Hope that helps.

I cant recomend any as I am in UK, however every time I visit USA, I end up in one of your lovely large book stores, get hold of one or two of the books from the garden section and sit down with a coffee, oh the bliss, there are hundreds that would help you, but expensive, so have a relaxing look through them BEFORE you spend any money, some have lovely pictures but no substance, some too advances, but try new landscaping, or beginners landscaping, we saw a large selection for all states while we visited in Feb/March this year, oh and some good mags also, I dont know if you can do what we can hear in UK, IF, you do see a book you want from the book store, the librery dont have it, we can order it and they will try get it for us, that is as cheep as you will get I think. good luck.

I'd second the Ann Lovejoy recommendation. She has one called "Gardening From Scratch" which talks a lot about where to start and how to get started. Considering you're in Portland, you should pop into Powell's Books. They've got loads of gardening info and a good PNW selection.

Good Luck & Have fun!
