passion plant

Davenport, IA

I've had this passion plant for over 2 years. It was doing great, no flowers though. It got spider mites. I sprayed it, and wiped down the leaves. They came back. So I cut it back, way back. It came back and was doing great. Then, more spider webs. So I changed the soil and wiped it all down and sprayed it. That was 2 weeks ago. Today, more spider webs. What should I do? It looks good, except for under the leaves and those ugly webs. This is an inside plant, but I put it outside so the rest of my plants wouldn't get spiders. Thanks. Tammy

I would keep spraying them off the leaves, sometimes you have to keep at it regularly to keep them from re-establishing themselves. Also try increasing the humidity where you keep the plant, spider mites have a harder time living in high humidity

Thanks, it's pretty humid outside today. I've been reading the other forums about this. I hate to throw it out.

Hi, hope I am not too late, I have trouble sometimes with RED SPIDDER, they are one of the most dreaded insects I know of, I have to warn you that they do hibernate in cracks and holes over winter, you will have to keep a careful eye on all your other plants that were in the same room with your Passion plant, I tried spraying for a whole year, damped down the greenhose, misted the plants every day etc, to no avail, then I heard about a parasitic wasp that only eats Red Spider, I sent away for this and it arrived by post in a little test tube container, hey presto, nrever had Spidder mite since, I do look really close every so often now, they are so hard to spot till the plant is under real stress and the webs you talked aboy are evident, it is too late by then, I cant remember the name of the parasitic wasp however, if you go on the web, search Red Spidder Mite, it should come up, you have to use them at a certain temp and indoors,I grouped all my plants together, when they arrive you just shake them onto your plants and do nothing else, I got new growth within two weeks. this wasp by the way is totally harmless to people or any other insects/animals, are just as small as the red spidder, whenever I buy plants now, I always check them out as I think my spidders were imported from a supplier/nursery, I live in Scotland so it is too cold here for them to survive out doors, so they must have been imported, hope this helps you out, good luck.

Thanks WeeNel. I still have it outside. I spray it twice a day. The squirrels haven't even touched it yet and they dig up everything. I'll be checking into the wasp. I can't wait to see my DH's face when I tell him I need a wasp now. Tammy
