This evening I was in the dark on the patio and was just about finished watering the plants (as I often do after dusk).
I got to one of my ferns in a container on the ground; when I watered it, the fern lit up! I was taken aback at first, but I finally reached out and shook the fern a bit. It happened again. Upon closer inspection, I found an innocent little lightning bug. :)
And that was the most pleasant surprise of my day!
Regards,
David
Surprise while watering!
I am sooo jealous. I have never seen one...we don't have them out here:(
I don't think we have them here either - and I would just love to come across one . . . or two . . . or three . . .
Come summer, my backyard is full of them. They're really neat to watch...and they fly so slowly that you can scoop them up very easily.
We have a lot of lightning bugs too. I thought they were everywhere. It's always a thrill to see them the first time of the year.

I remember seeing lightening bugs as a child when we lived in the country, Jax, fl.
Sure would like to see them again.
The kids love to spend summer evenings catching them (me too).
We have them here, and it is a sure sign that summer is here. I love to sit out at night and watch them.
I look forward to seeing them every year. Bugs me out how they synchronize the flashing.
And it bugs me that I don't have those bugs.
They are fairies, little flying fairies. Adorable.
MJ
I have been watching every night, and they haven't arrived here yet. Looking forward to seeing them again.
Ya know, I haven't seen hardly any for the past few years, but there are a bunch of them around now. I haven't seen them at night, yet, though - cause I've been conking out early, lol. They're friendly and like to land on you.
~Kristy... still, to this day, feels guilty about playing "lightning bug hockey" when she was a child - the lightning bug ended up as a glowing smear on the picnic table! ;(
Caughting lightening bugs are the most wonderful thing my granddaughter loves to do in summertime. We put them in a container with screen on top so they can breath, and she puts them in her bedroom and watches the lightning show, then releases them come morning.
I love lightning bugs. I refuse to use pesticides in the garden and I like to think I have more lightning bugs because of that. I don't know if it's true or not :>}
Last year, I saw my white koi grab a lightning bug to eat. His whole head was glowing as he swam away!
That would be awesome to see!!
I remember as a kid growing up in Virginia, every summer there were many, many lightning bugs in the evening and at night! I've been in Florida for 40 years and have only seen them a few times over the years. I wonder why they aren't around here every year? They sure bring back pleasant memories of my childhood. As kids we would catch them and put them in Mason Jars with holes punched in the lids and take them into our bedroom at night .... best night light in the world! Of course I kinda sorta remember taking the light off the end of the bug too and putting on our finger for a ring in the dark! :) Ick! I can't believe I ever did that ... but, I did!
Plantladylin - lol - we sure do change, don't we???!!!
Saw my first lightning bug last night! It is so cool to have a seasonal surprise like that.
Mary Jo
Have not seen them in B.R. in nearly 30 yrs. maybe because when we did see them as kids we caught as many as we could, put them in jars, crushed them on sidewalks or just terrorised the poor things to death. Wish the same could be said for Love Bugs!
Lance
4004 do you have love bugs in LA????
Do we have love bugs? Late Summer, mostly August it's insane. They seem to be attracted to the color white. And or course I have a white truck. While gassing up I will have to sometimes sit in the truck for all the darn things swarmming around.
And Stink! They should call them Stinking Love Bugs. Let's not even talk about what they do to the paint job. I know I'd murdered millions on LA,Miss, Al,and Fla. road ways.
Lance
I don't think ours stink, but they are everywhere in the summer. Ugh. Eats the paint right off your car if you leave their gunk on there long enough.
June is our lightning-bug month, so we should be seeing them pretty soon. Oh, they are lovely here, rising out of the gardens at dusk.
I envy you this first little glimmer!
Magical!
