I have a lonicera purpusii which flowered beautifully the 1st year I had it. I pruned it after flowering and it ended up with dieback on some of the stems. This year I hardly had any flowers. Ihave not pruned it yet and it now has had a massive growth spurt and is very lush. I have looked up pruning and it seems to say to cut back 1 in 3 old stems to 12 inches above the ground and then cut the rest back by a third. What is the correct method and is it too late?
Lonicera Purpusii/ Shrubby Honeysuckle
Hi Formidablelady, you have I think over pruned your Lonicera, you should get Lovely fragrant cream/white flowers, over in UK it is a winter flowering Honeysuckle and only grows to about 6 or 7 feet, it likes a light shaded spot with plenty of humus forked into the soil, I think (could be wrong) that it flowers on the previous years growth, so maybe you have taken all that growth off with your last pruning and it just needs time to recover, I would think it will flower for you the next season, Lonicera's dont realy like a lot of pruning, all they require is OLD and dead wood removed, only IF they rech a stage where they have taken over do you want to cut them back as severe as you have, ofcourse when you do that, you loose the flowers for that year.
Hope this is some help, be patient and it should reward you once again with the flower and perfume, good luck.
WeeNel.
Thanks WeeNel. I have left it alone and it looks fantastic. Hopefully will be full of flowers next year.
