In a previous discussion about reusing potting soil from containers, some said they place it in the compost heap. I did create a small raised bed (hopefully for onions) and used a lot of discarded potting soil from last year because the soil here is so sandy. The discarded potting mix contains Perlite. I'm assuming Perlite, being a natural lava product, is not environmentally harmful, but now I wonder.

Personally, I use it whenever I can, especially in areas that are not conditioned well or have never been planted in. Usually I mix it in potting soil and then add it to the flower bed where the planting is to take place.
