Garden products database

Orangeville, ON(Zone 4b)

Ok, I see ecrane3....thanks!
I'll be in the market shortly for a little garden tiller and I don't have a clue which is better than another....this database could be so helpful in my decision-making for this and other things I plan to buy in the future.
I'll be watching!

Thank you kaperc, I just ordered the Cobrahead, it looked like just the thing for getting the ageratum from between my heucheras. Looks like I use it for lots of things.

You will love it. One thing I keep forgetting is that the edge is great for scraping, too. Saturday I was cleaning up some weeds we had sprayed and I hate to think how much more difficult it would have been without it. Definitely five stars from me!

Question - there's a certain pruning saw we really like. Do I find the mfg's website rather than the place we usually purchase from? Thanks!

Yes, this is about the products themselves not where you bought it from, so you should find the manufacturer's site.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

will do :)

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I was just coming in to suggest this feature - and here it is already! Awesome! This is exactly what I was looking for. Being a new gardener, this kind of thing is very, very helpful. Looking forward to it going live!

Ok, here is my question can we have categories inside categories? For example I followed the about link (http://davesgarden.com/gp/ ) Dave put up named "Hand Tools" and after you link that and the new page comes up I was wondering if it could be organized so that if you where looking for a hand held hoe or hand held trowel then you had a link to click on.

So you did not have to scroll through everything that has been posted? I know there are only three right now but just a thought! LOL

Also after slicking on "swan hoe" a tool that I was trying to find the name to in a different section I found two different names for. Maybe they are different tools that look very much a like, so maybe there is a way to group "like" type tools as well.

Maybe that is to much trouble but I was just wondering/thinking! LOL

Here is the link to the page when I was trying to figure out what mine was while it was "misplaced"! LOL http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/739005/

Canyon, TX(Zone 6b)

Ok another question! LOL I was going to post my tool in the new sention but it says "maufactueres site (Not Salers Site)". I have no idea who "manufactuers" is just the site where we found it for sale so we knew what it was called.

Is that the site I post?

Thanks!

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

How about leaving the mfg blank and put where you bought it in a comment?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

No, you shouldn't post the site where you found it for sale as the manufacturer (unless they were the mfg--sometimes that happens where you buy something direct from the people who make it). Take a look at the site where you bought it from, it will tell you the brand name, then if you google for the product including the brand name you will often find the manufacturer's website. If you do that and still come up empty then hopefully it's OK to leave that part blank for now and someone else can come in later and fill it in if they know it.

Canyon, TX(Zone 6b)

Well it is ok, I just wont post it. It came in a kit type thing and I have no clue to makes it.

But I am fairly sure that we found the right name for it! LOL But I guess it is safer to not post it, then to post it with the wrong name! LOL

txflower, Is there any kind of mark or label on your wondertool, either blade or handle, to give a hint as to who made it?

Or Admin: would it muddy the waters too much to have an 'orphan' section for items we find useful but can't come up with a single manufacturer? Sort of a generic tool/thingie section.

How about "Garden Garb" or "Yard Wear" to encompass hats/bug suits/gloves/footwear/garden toolbelts/ treeclimbing spikes. Just thinking out loud here. Then further categories can be named thereunder.

Canyon, TX(Zone 6b)

No there is not label or anything, other then China! LOL So I guess they made it! LOL

It really is an awesome little thing!! I can't tell you how lost I was without it! LOL It is awesome! LOL

Issaquah, WA(Zone 7a)

Txflower,
You feel about your garden thingie, like I feel about my Poker, (also without manufacturer but my most widely used tool besides the shovel.) It's so useful in so many instances, I can't be without one. It's almost worth microchipping with GPS!

Canyon, TX(Zone 6b)

LOL Oh yes I would chip mine if I had a way to get the GPS chip and do it! LOL

I just had my 3 animals chipped! LOL (Still thinking about chipping my daughter! LOL Just kidding! She is such a good little girl! And as she says "MOM I am not a little girl any more I am a 1st grader!") LOL :(( )

Dave,

I added a photo to the Atlas Gloves entry in the database and it comes up as from ecrane3. How do we add a photo after we've made our initial comment on the product?

I just went to the database and clicked on Greenhouses, supposed to be 43 in there, it said there were none....?????

North Augusta, ON

bumping cause I really want to see the reviews on those 43 invisible greenhouses---

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

I think it just means products in the greenhouse category are 43. Could be anything that is used in a greenhouse.

North Augusta, ON

but when I click on it, it tells me there are no entries---

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Hmmmm....you're right. Silly me for not clicking! Contact Admin below?

North Augusta, ON

Maybe----thought this might be quicker, but I was wrong---LOL

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I think what happened is for a while there was some company who had put a bunch of their things in there (it was something sort of like Plant Scout I think where you could see the reviews of the item and then a link to go buy it on their website), but then they were removed or decided to leave or something and their items were removed too. I don't know any of the reasons why, I just know for a while there was a company that had a ton of stuff in there and now it's not there, but that category count probably got accidentally left behind.

Ayrshire Scotland, United Kingdom

Hi everyone, I think Ecrane has came up with a great idea that will be so helpful to so many visitors to the site, well done Ecrane, can I just add that as we are world wide on the site, perhaps thing under
Greens = Environmentally Friendly, then we will all understand what that is for,
Lawn Care = Mowers, edging tools, rakes etc
Pots and containers = Urns, tubs and baskets, trays etc
Garden tools (Hand) = spade, rakes, forks, edging tools, picks, etc
Pruning tools= hand held, pruning saws, pruners, hedge sheers
Heavy duty & Gardening Machinery = Chain saws, Weed Burners, Snow ploughs, Tractors, etc
Feeds = Fertilisers, Rose food, Multi purpose etc
Weed Killers = Chemical etc,
Watering = cans, hoses, sprayer, etc
Lighting = Indoors
Lighting = outdoors,
Greenhouses & Sundries = shelving, Heating, Trays, Glass clips, Fans, drip water/feeders, etc
Compost & Composting = Bins, Manure etc,
Herbicides = weedkillers,
Plant protection & Support = Shading, Canes Ties, Etc
Pest& diseases Control = Greenfly Sprays etc,
Ponds = Liners, Fountains etc,
Garden Sundries = Labels, Marker pens, Gloves, string/twines, etc
. I know this may be hard to do, but maybe we could try a more universal language that is easier for everyone to follow, considering we sometimes do have troubles with our different names and sayings, but please dont let this be written in stone, I am just throwing this into the chat for consideration, yet I also know that there is always someone who will help someone who is struggling to find any items, hope this is of some value. WeeNel.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

WeeNel--as you add things to the database you can add whatever words you think describe the item, it's not like some of the other databases where the categories are fixed. Sometimes there might be a category that's already there that you think fits your item, but if there isn't you can make up a new one.

Ayrshire Scotland, United Kingdom

Thanks Ecrane, I understand now, as ever, you are the words of wisdom, I misunderstood by thinking the list would be made and have to stick to this manner of search, but it is a lot clearer now, I look forward to it as you will have read, I am a regular visitor to your shores and love to search for new ideas and products, and it gets a bit hairy when I ask for something and the poor shop assistant has a hard time trying to understand, sometimes I even have to demonstrate, that can be fun, now with a list, I can search ahead of my visits. Good luck with this great idea, I am a happy gardener. best wishes, WeeNel.
