landscaping

I have a landscaping that I want to do. I need to cover an area in the front that is 28 yards X 2 yards on the side is 7 yards by 2 yards surronding 6 trees, the bottom is 4 yards by 2 yards. the mulch comes in 17.00 by 3/4 yard. How much mulch would I need to cover this area.

The key thing to keep in mind is that the yards you're measuring in your garden are square yards, and the yards the mulch guys are selling you are cubic yards. First add up all your areas to figure out how many square yards you have (I come up with 78 sq yds all together but you might want to doublecheck that), then multiply that by how deep you want the mulch to be (this number will most likely be 2 or 3 inches, make sure to convert it to yards by dividing it by 36, otherwise you won't get the right answer). Then multiply that number by the total number of square yards you have, and that's how many yards you need from the mulch people. You can subtract out a little if there's a significant area around the trees that you're not planning to mulch.

It sounds like you are planning to do 3 rectangular areas. If you want the mulch to be 3 inches deep, here are the formulas:

28 x 2 x (1/12) = 4 2/3 yards
7 x 2 x (1/12) = 1 1/6 yards
4 x 2 x (1/12) = 2/3 yards.

You would need a total of 6.5 yards to cover the areas 3 inches deep. When you say the mulch comes in 17.00 by 3/4 yard, do you mean it's $17 for 3/4 yard? If so, the cost would be = $17 x (6.5 / 3/4) = about $153 for 6 3/4 yds.

Is that what you were asking?
