HAHAHAHA - I LOVE the fragrance of that H. sp. aff finlaysonii Mark... Maybe its a 'guy' thing!!!

My cat 'A'A agrees with me. She smelled this flower while I had it on the coffee table photographing it, then kept smelling it (which cats never do with flowers) with her mouth hanging slightly opened, as if she were offended and intrigued at the same time. She finally swatted it and ran away.
I rest my case.

OK...so it's a San Francisco thing!!! LOL

I love checking out the "what's blooming this month" threads. Everyone takes such great pictures.

I am finally going to be able to find out what my noid hoya is...I hope. The first buds blasted but these ones should open today. This is one of the cuttings I got in the fall of 2005 when Carol was doing some pruning. Sandyc was kind enough to send a few boxes north. I don't know if anyone remembers that but anyhow, we were all supposed to figure out what they were as they weren't labeled. I think I got most of them just by the foliage but this one stumped me. I want to thank you both again for your kindness because I must say, I'm certainly enjoying growing them.

Carol, the vitellina (egg yolk flowers) that I got from you recently has a cluster of buds that should be open by mid week. There are so many I cant count them but it has got to be between 35-40 or more. The plant had 2 peduncles when you sent it. One is still bare but the second one started forming buds almost immediately.

I'll post a pic when it opens.

Thanks Mark!

While I'm at it I'll also post some fresh kerrii flowers...

My Fungii had bloomed while I was gone. I also had a noid that was about to bloom before leaving and I missed it, but it's starting another flowa bud, so hopefully I'll see it soon.

Blessings,

I think this might be citrina - it was a "stow-away" on my last order from Hawaii, so if anyone knows for sure, I'd appreciate an ID! The petals are reflexed, and are a pale pale yellow, with a white corolla. The corona is red and yellow - maybe a little white in there, too. I hope I used the right terms - I've been studying the glossary section of Stemma! Anyway, I've been waiting several days for this to open - it had lost most of it's buds, but these three survived. I walked into the greenhouse tonight to do my "nightly check," and I KNEW something had bloomed because the greenhouse smelled wonderful!!! I'm horrible at describing fragrance, but I can tell you it's wonderful and, for me, rivals lacunosa as my favorite.
Karen

P.S. I also have multiflora (with lots o' buds), acuta, lacunosa and cv Noelle getting ready to bloom, but they will probably be somewhere in the June postings!

Man, I really do need a new camera!

I have a bad feeling about the buds on my noid hoya. They haven't opened any further and the stems are turning yellow. I'm not sure what I did but it looks like it's already starting to form new buds so hopefully the third time I'll be lucky. Based on what I could see I'm thinking it might be diptera but I guess I'll have to wait to be sure.

Kabob...YES/SI/OUI...you either need a new camera or tranquilizers!!!! LOL Can really tell, but I do have a citrina blooming and will see if they look alike... Doesn't it smell wonderful!!!???

Can you shoot a photo of it? Check this out https://www.bigislandgrowers.com/AHcomp/AHdipt1.php

I have a full table of NOIDS...I have terrible luck with tags...and I won't but them back on until I am SURE and if it isn't from DL I insist on blooming it out...so...I have become rather fond of them. AH, the sweet mysteries of life!!!

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Yes, it is fun trying to figure them out. I only have a few noids but I have a sneaking suspicion that a few I bought with names aren't what the tags say. It will be interesting to see what they are when they bloom.

It's funny....when I was trying to figure out what this one was I went through all the pictures in the compendium on your website and that's where I came up with diptera. The flowers don't look the same even when I flatten them out but the colours are close and the leaf looks like a possible match too. I can't get a better picture of the flower than the one above but here's a better shot of the leaves.

I currently have 4 confirmed NOIDS and based on what Nightowl said I too think that there are a few lurking in my hoya house that do have name tags that are quite possibly wrong!!

I recently bought a nice plant of H. campanulata from Carol because the plant that I already had labled as campanulata that I got from someone else turned out to be none other than H. camphorifolia. How those 2 got confused is beyond me as they look nothing alike. Mistakes happen all the time though.

I know one of my NOID's is definately in the finlaysonii group because of the leaves. It's pretty easy to place one in that group just by the leaves but until it blooms I dont have an idea what it might be. I know who I got it from and when my plant blooms i'll contact the person and see if they can give me a more positive ID on it.

Hey Aloha, the link you posted above seems to have some serious problems.......
edited to say,
I just heard from Carol who said that the notice only comes up because they are already extremely secure, and don't feel the need to pay the 400$ to the ISP for their Security. In the 4 years they have run Big Island Growers (her DH is the webmaster) there has never been a breach of security. Safe as Fort Knox.

I'm like a kid at Christmas - I can hardly contain myself. My multiflora (javanica) has multiple blooms getting ready to burst - a first for me (the multiple part). Any minute now........
