Does anyone live arround where the wild fires are in Waycross, GA? I grew up in Jacksonville, FL and can remember in early 1950's when the swamp caught on fire and burned for days and days. We could see the plume of smoke in Jax, and at night could see the glow to the north of us. My aunt and uncle had a farm around Homeverille, GA and the fire burned up to their property. People from all over were fighting it. Prisoners were even taken to the firelines to fight the fire. When the weather report came on tonight they showed a satelite shot of the smoke drifting across FL, out into the Gulf and pooling around Tampa. Amazing shot.
I feel so sorry for the wildlife. Birds, small mammals and other species have just been born or only a couple of wks. old. It is devastating. Makes my heart hurt.
I hope it was not started on purpose.
Wildfires in GA
Although devastating in modern day, we must remember that wildfires are natural all across the southeast and sometimes benefit wildlife. http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/nge/Article.jsp?id=h-2200
