Suggestions for a lawn tree

I am looking for any suggestions for a good lawn tree. Probably something deciduous or semi-deciduous, so that there will be some good shade in the summer and allow the sunlight to come through in the cooler winter. The location is in San Mateo County, Redwood City, Western climate zone 17. It is actually sort of sandwiched between zone 15 and 16, just to help a bit. Thanks so much for any suggestions.

If you try googling Native California Trees you will get lists and lists.........besides shade do you have any other considerations. Like........
1.) Ultimate size - are there any electric lines around?
2.) Wildlife concerns - attracting or detering? Do you want hummingbirds? Songbirds? Deer proof?
3.) Substanance - would you like fruit or nuts?
4.) Watering concerns - is the site where you water alot or a little?
5.) Overall concerns - some trees are messier than others, some grow faster, wider, etc...

More info would help pinpoint direction.........

if ya can get the soil right ( they work in south texas even during freeze- our freak 2" of x-mas snow a couple years ago) maybe wild prear or plumeria
