Earth Day

Springfield, OH(Zone 6a)

What will you be doing today to celebrate our Earth? What better place than DG to observe this day. I'll be playing in the dirt, maybe dicuss the importance of our actions on this great planet with my little girl.

I am reminding DH to record Planet Earth tonight which is on the Animal Planet channel. They are showing a number of past episodes as well as a new one. If you haven't watched this, I can tell you it is beautiful, thought provoking and amazing to see all the creatures of the earth and to be aware of how dependent we all are on one another. If you have children or grandchildren, this is a wonderful series to watch with them. and, as you say, discuss the importance of our actions on this planet.

I watched a Planet Earth marathon on A&E. Most amazing wildlife pictures I ever saw.
But better yet, I am pleased to see so many people thinking green lately. I saw a list of things we can do, small sacrifices, to help the planet. I have embraced 2 of them so far. I take a large tote bag I have to the grocery store and it can hold about 20 lbs, which is more than I buy most time.
Also, I don't wash clothes unless the machine is a full load. If I need a particular item and there isn't enough clothes in the washer to justify running a load, I wash them by hand. Last night, I discovered I was out of bras. So I washed one in the sink and it was dry by morning. I also wanted my favorite nightgown washed so while I was showering, I was soaking the nightgown in the bathroom sink. I just scrubbed it a little, rinsed and wrung it out and then squeezed the rest of the water out in a towel. It's hanging on the outside of my closet door now and will be dry by tonight. Each one of those hand-washed items took about 1 minute because I let them both soak for a few minutes before I scrubbed them.
What are you folks doing to help the enviroment?

I think gardeners already do alot, some of us without even realizing it, the flowers, the birds, the bees. I am inner city, low income, but it is amazing how much wildlife there is in town. It is the little things that seem to make the difference, I don't have to spend money to do it. Believe it or not, when I walk the dog, I will pick up trash as I walk through the neighborhood, I feed birds, I too will wash only when I have full loads. Just little things but I'm trying.

Crashbandiscoot -- How nice to find someone on DG with a connection to NM. There are some DG members listed but very few posts from them. In the Southwest Gardening forum, the posts are mainly from Arizona. So I just lurk in there and envy their gardens. It would take way too much water to attempt those in Albuquerque.

Woodspirit -- We TiVo'd four episodes of Planet Earth last night to watch when I have time.

Our washer has a "small load" setting, just enough for a week's worth of my undies, pjs and summer shorts and tees. Anything less than that I wash by hand. We wash only in cold water, use an eco-friendly detergent.

I could not afford a hybrid car but did buy one that is very fuel efficient, and I always combine my errands and shopping trips to save gasoline. We have a person at church who drives a Cadillac Escalade which is the size of a small building and gets 7 mpg. She is single, no kids, just drives this gas guzzler to work all by herself because she likes having a lot of room. That's the kind of thinking that must change if we are to renew our planet. One of DH's car programs last night was about bio diesel fuel for vehicles. It's vegetable oil and the example they showed was made from canola oil. It's already available in some gas stations and many newer vehicles can use it. Now that's earth-saving thinking.

Every small thing we do is of benefit. So -- good for us!

The company that I worked at for many years had a branch office in Farmington. I was there many times and always managed to take a few side trips, four corners,Indian ruins, etc. My daughter and her husband lived in Farmington for several years while a power plant was being constructed. I have been to many places in your state,Taos,Santa Fe and others. I enjoyed them all. People who have never been to New Mexico don't know what they have missed, beautiful state.
As I recall the airport in Farmington was atop a mesa,or at least it seemed as if it was. Landing was never very exciting, but when you took off and flew off the edge,it was.
