Garden Box Questions

Lebanon, PA

Hi everyone, I'm new to DG, but so far it looks like a great place to be - especially for a beginner like myself. My husband and I are tackling a whole-yard project, complete with garden box. We've built the frame, but now I have some questions...
Like, how do I fill it? I mean, obviously I'll have to put dirt in it, but do I put large rocks in first? Should I put a barrier between the dirt in the box and the dirt of my yard below? Is regular topsoil okay? I'll be growing flowers mostly, but maybe veggies, too. Can they be grown on opposite sides of the box? Or should they be separated completely?
I also have a ton of questions about which flowers work best together and for my zone etc... but I'll save those for another thread.
Here's a pic of what we have so far. Any helpful tips would be appreciated! Thanks for any help.

Looks very nice, I think I would put some kind of barrier between that wood on the backside that looks to be part of your porch though. I'd be afraid of the moist soil coming into contact with it. Probably rot the wood. I wouldn't put a barrier beteen your fill and the ground though because of drainage issues. If your putting perennials
and vegetables together I would mix them up so that when your vegetables (annuals)
die there won't be any big bare spots. Regular top soil should be fine. Especially if it
is a clay loam. the clay will help keep in the moisture that you will much need by having the bed out of the ground so high. I would just choose plants that require about the same sort of conditions eg. moisture level, fertilizer etc. since they are in the same container. For example roses and cactus probably wouldn't work but other than that good luck and have fun. And don't neglect the watering
