Plan vs. Plant Collection

Toddville, IA(Zone 5a)

I read an article recently, couldn't tell you where, that said that when your garden looks more like a plant collection than a cohesive design, it was time to start over.

Here's the thing -- How do you tell the difference? Especially if you tend toward the cottage garden "lots of everything" look?

Bottom line, plant your garden in the way that is pleasing for you. I don't do the layered look so much. I don't find a lot of short plants for the front of the border that I like! So mine is pretty much everything about 2-3 feet tall.

I mainly have dayliles, echinaches and hosta wnd lilies. So mine would probably qualify as more collection, but I love it!

I agree, if your garden makes you happy then leave it alone! Unless you're planning to sell the house soon, then you might want to make things a little less wild and more organized looking. But otherwise if you're happy with it, enjoy the fruits of your labors!

if you think it looks overstimulating and such a hodgepodge, I would just blend it all together with grass. Not the humongous ornamental dense grasses, but maybe prairie or native grasses growing in with your flowers, about any grass.
But I really believe that that is probably the purpose of grass and not just a lawn or pasture. Picture a meadow with tall grasses and flowers. Also it is natures design
it is a living mulch keeps soil cooler and holds in moisture better. Props up tall flowers that would otherwise need staking. I would even try bluegrass . Hey its cheap.
this is just all my opinion, hope it helps. good luck
