I either have gnats or dried out plants -- or BOTH!!
I tried spraying an insecticidal soap stuff - natch. So I got sticky traps. That worked OK (dead gnats & live gnats) until I had to cut the sticky trap out of my cat's fur.
I have read the "sharp sand" should be put on top of the soil. What in blue blazes is sharp sand? where do you get it?
fungus gnats
LOL I've often wondered what sharp sand is, and have yet to figure it out. Here are several threads that talk about dealing with fungus gnats. I haven't read through them all, but maybe you can find some information in them about the sand, or perhaps a different idea you'd like to try.

If you need more information, do a search for gnats (or for knats, as sometimes it is misspelled) and you will find lots and lots of threads talking about it.
Sorry I couldn't answer your question, but I hope you find something that will help you. :o)
I think this is what they are referring to: (sharp sand)

OK - Diatomaceous earth I've heard of. I'll look for that.
thanks for the links. I'll keep looking. My bar with the plants is right beside the nook where I eat. Litle flying gnats are WAY annoying!
I'll share if I find out anything.
HI--i posted a thread on the hosta side of garden talk and asked for info on ungus knats and got a lot odf feedback with great solutions--goood luck
Re the sharp sand, we use it a lot here on the west coast of scotland, mainly to add to the soil in pots to give good drainage, we have a high rainfall, it is not like the powdery white stuff found on the beaches in FL USA, it is courser grained than that, you have to buy it from Garden Centre or Hotocultural places as the builders or beach sand has chemicals that would harm the plants, the stuff we use has been sterilised, we get it in small bags or by the ton for outdoor gardening, to get rid of your bugs you could always top dress your pots with ornamental pea gravel, it comed in all colours, is smaller that outdoor gravel, when the bugs are in season here it is normally rotten veg or fruit that brings them flying around, perhaps some plants are more atractive to them also, maybe a pot of fresh herbs would help, Good luck.
