I have a small ficus plant in a pot indoors that looks a lot like this
http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/16740/
and I have noticed there is mould on the soil in which the plant is.
The plant has been loosing leaves for a while now, which suggests to me that there is something wrong with it, although there is also new growth, which suggests the plant is not dying.
The lower stalk has grown a little bit whitish, which looks bad.
What can I do about the mould in the soil? Can I just remove it and replace it with new compost?
Is this plant sick? What should I do about it?
Help please.

Mould on Houseplant
I just looked at the roots, and they are completely covered in mold, so I'm throwing the plant out :(
Sounds like it got to the point where there's not much you can do to save it. But if you decide to try again, my guess is the cause of the mold was that the plant was watered too much, so on the next one try backing off on how frequently you water it, let the soil dry out a bit in between.
