Final close-up. When they took off they were headed North, so this may be the final visit from them.

Wow and double wow - stunning photos, Gardenpom - and what a treat to see such a large amount of those darling birds!!!!

Melbourne, FL

Thanks, Murmur. I am sure going to miss these wonderful birds. Hopefully I will see them again this fall and winter.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

You're right Pelle!
That's exactly how they get their name. Then there are many butterflies named after the swallow for the hind wing extensions, of course.
Interresting!

Deb
Been really enjoying all your pics Murmur, lilyfan, pelle, Resin, Marilyn, KC and GP. I didn't have a chance to post the CWW pics at winter's end, so here's one of them. I still see some here and there, but nothing like they were in winter. Thick as thieves..

Wonderful, Debnes!!! How I hope I will see something like that someday . . . I know they're in the PNW, maybe when I'm home more I'll get lucky, eh??

Kingsport, TN(Zone 6b)

I agree, WOW and double wow. I would probably hyperventilate and forget to take a picture if I saw that many waxwings at once! Do you have them year round Gardenpom or only during migration season? You get the best variety of birds! I won't be surprised if you start showing pictures of pterodactyls stopping at your feeders lol!

Hi Pell! You take the best RBW pics! I never get tired of looking at them. I'm so glad you now have a resident mockingbird. I really like them. I discovered today that there is a pair nesting in my thorny hawthorn tree. They fed off it all winter. I took a pcitre of the nest today while stalking the chickadees but the nest is hard to see.

Murmur, I love your goldfinch next to the "pinup" picture. That's so cute!

Yes, thanks for posting that wonderful grosbeak photo Kchuahua. It is beautiful. I hope to see one someday.

Resin, I always enjoy your photos and really appreciate all the info you supply to us. Thanks for the mealworm info. (maybe if I threw them up in the air??! only kidding!)

Pell, here is a photo of a red bellied wp who has "discovered" my deck. Between the suet block and the rotten deck wood he is in piggy heaven lol!

Wow!! how exciting Debns!! Thanks for sharing that!

Quoting:
Am I wrong that's how they came about their names by swallowing bugs in flight?

It isn't, unfortunately - it is from an old Germanic word meaning 'forked tail'.

There is a small group of Waxwings still hanging around, and I think I finally discovered what they are after.....I have a Florida native shrub by my house (can't remember the name), but it is full of berries now. Here is a pic of the berries.

Whenever they fly down into my Green Ash tree, which is right near the berries, the Mockingbird chases them away.

Great pics GP! I'm sure Resin will ID that berry bush.

Super shot of the RBW Lily! LOL, throwing mealworms into air!

Thanks for the info Resin seemed logical but apparently too much so.

And three again at the new feeder (thanks, Pelletory, for telling me about the dangers of my other one . . . I still want to get a more decorative one - for me, obviously, not the Hummers! - but I picked this one up for now).

Beautiful pics Murmur! I wish I could get the Flicker to come closer here.

ghia, really nice pics! I love those colors in the first shot too.

Now the Blue Jays are coming to the feeder regularly for suet. This one grabbed a bunch then went into an Apple Tree to share some with his mate.
This is such a great time of year!

I missed message about the dangerous hummer feeder.. please could you repeat as I have three different kinds in my yard? Thanks

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Fantastic shots everyone!

I love the Cedar Waxwings shots, and that red belly stands out well against the blue sky ghia_girl!

Murmur, wonderfulshots of the Flicker (never seen it!) and Hummer!

pelletory, cute birds!

You have so many unusual birds there, thanks for posting the pics!

Marlton, NJ

The dangerous hummingbird feeder is the old style or original Best-1 feeder.
Heres info on it. (please remember this is the old one, they have modified since then but some people might still own these).

Grackle sounding off.

These guys sound like squeeky wheels to me.

Thanks for the link about the dangerous feeders! I replaced mine w/ the new design last year, as I did have an accident here. I recall glancing out the kitchen window and being horrified as I realized a little female was hanging from the feeder and not moving!

Fortunately, I did get to her in time, and was able to get her free.

Just like in the photos, her beak was stuck, and her little body had somehow slipped between the feeder and the perch ring. No way she could have freed herself.

Pelletory, that's great!!!!!!! Made me laugh out loud! And that grackle is a beauty.

Tigerlily, I am so glad you were able to save her - and I am so glad I never had to face that problem!!

Murmur, that close-up of the rufous hummingbird is awesome! And Pell, that cardinal pic really made me chuckle :)

Great photos all, thanks for sharing!

Nice pics Pelletory......wish the Goldfinches were that beautiful color during the winter when I see them.

Thanks GP.

Hineni, Those Cardinals looked completely bewildered when the ports were closed. I had changed the weight setting because of the Starlings but they have figured a way to sneek a seed out anyway so I'll probably change the setting tomorrow. Those darn starlings are really clever.

Today it was warm and sunny. It was the first day I haven't seen any Junco's so I guess they've headed North. The Goldfinch will be happy; less competiton for thistle.

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

My Junco population is thinning down - seems late for them to still be around at all, but it hasn't warmed up much so I guess they're as confused as the rest of us.

Tiller, OR(Zone 8a)

I'm so enjoying the photos! Especially the flicker. I had one close the other day, and it stayed put while I came in for the camera and went through the yard to get the sun at my back. Then when I lifted the camera it flew away!

I did get some distant shots, and I have many, many bird shots to look through, but I can't even look at them now. This old tired PC quit recognizing my photo cards, and wants me to format them. Hah!

New PC should be ready in the next couple days.

Thanks for sharing, everyone!

I've been enjoying all the photos here too tigerlily!

The sweetest thing about spring is watching the mother birds tend their babies. The little babywings rush the mom when they see her, flap their wings rapidly, and tilt their heads back with their beaks open wide. They're just precious! Some can eat by themselves a while, but still rush the mom when she comes near... She dutifully looks for the next open mouth and fills it with food. One had 3 babies rush at once and patiently tended them all.
Male Robins come and grab as many mealies as their beak can hold and fly off to feed their family..
I had to start cutting down chrysalises from the back fence, and hanging them in a critter cage.. I noticed a couple of the Gulf Fritillary chrysalids disappeared, and figure some birds have been snatching them. Oh well, I just have to stay on top of that. I want to keep all the wildlife that come back there. Finally have it set up pretty nice, and I'm thrilled with everything.. Who said we can't have it all? I think it's possible!
