suddenly I'm "watching" every thread I post to... ??

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

In the last little bit, I've noticed that after I post to a thread it pops up on my "watched threads" list when there's a new post... With the first one, I thought I'd inadventantly clicked the "watch this thread" link, but now I'm quite sure it's not me.

I figured I'd report and see if anybody else was noticing this....

Corning, NY(Zone 5a)

Your not alone, not sure if I like it yet or not..:)Anita

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

It's something Dave changed yesterday--you can go to your preferences and turn it off if you don't want it. It's mentioned in a few of the other recent threads around here too if you want more info.

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

I noticed also. Not sure if I like it either.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

It's a new 'better' feature. You can turn it off - go to preferences. I turned mine off PRONTO... What a nightmare!!! :(

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I do like it, often I want to see what was added after I posted and forget exactly what thread it was. With it automatically popping up now, I can quickly see if it's something I want to follow or not. I just unwatch it when I decide.

Corning, NY(Zone 5a)

Sue, your right, I have lost many threads I have posted on, now I wont:)

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I guess it would be a 'nightmare' if you post all over the place, even then, a simple click and a thread is gone, you can even do that immediately after your last post.
I think it's a great improvement, just something new to get used to, an extra click. No way would I want to completely opt out.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

By opting out you are simply going back to the way it was before the 'improvement.' I click if I want to watch a thread, just like before! VIOLA! Simple!

I don't post all over the place either.. ;) Just read mostly - but I still like making my own decisions - and thus turned that feature off.

Before you opt out...

Be aware that if you do, you'll have to click on "watch this thread" for ANY thread you want to watch.

That means you'll have to click on the link to "watch" each thread you start, too.

If you publish photos to the PlantFiles, you'll need to closely watch the PF Pictures forum for any replies to the automatically-created threads because you won't be set up to watch them, either.

Opting in or out is an all-or-nothing proposition.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Yes, Terry - I completely understand except for the part about having to watch threads you START? That was a great feature - why take it away? I certainly didn't expect a great feature like that to be taken away and in order for me to keep it every thread I reply to is watched. Pardon my bluntness but 'all or nothing' doesn't make sense. It's taking a feature away from folks instead of adding a new one.

Since 'watch this thread' was right above the box to reply in, it's so easy to click to 'watch a thread' you WANT to watch, which is not all the threads I would post to.

Nicole

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

and just as easy to unwatch.
This was an option requested by many as it was a problem forgetting where one posted and wanting to follow it. Often it became time consuming to hunt the exact thread down.

I love the feature, just have to change habits and soon, doing the 'unwatch' click will be habit and everyone will forget the past.

I love the new feature! I'm forever forgetting to watch a thread. Now I won't have to worry about that. :o)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Well, phoo.... I wish "opting out" meant returning to the way it was before, with threads I started (or PF pics I posted) being watched automatically. I guess I'll try the new way for a while and see how much of a pain it is to "unwatch" threads... I do post rather randomly to a lot of threads without wanting to add them to my "watch" list, especially on forums I visit frequently (where it's easy enough to keep up with threads without watching them).

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

I like it. Thanks Dave.

North Augusta, ON

I like it too, I was always doing a quick post, then forgetting the thread...now I don't have to worry about it. It is so simple just to click on "unwatch" if the thread isn't going in a direction I'm interested in....

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'm just glad to know it's a "feature" not a "bug" -- thanks!

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

I think it's neat!!!! I can never remember what I responded too - now Dave does it for me- what a guy!

Crossville, TN

I like it also....just makes less work for this old brain!! before this came into being I searched and searched for a recipe that I wanted to print out...finally found it...Jo

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

So far, not a fan of the change. Would prefer the opt out was back to the old way (echoing critter's post above).

Buffalo, WV(Zone 7a)

I love it! Now I can't forget to watch a thread, LOL. Thanks, Dave!

This feature gets my vote. I am a member of about 5 or 6 international forums for various things and it makes life simple from my point of view!

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

I liked the fact that if you started a thread it was watched automatically. I don't want to watch every thread I reply to, but I do want to watch my own. I know I can "watch" it myself but I liked it better the other way..

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I haven't turned it off yet... going to see how it goes for a week or so with just "unwatching" threads I don't want to follow. There are a lot of times when I post, "ooh, pretty flower" or "nice photo!" on a thread that I don't end up watching, so I probably use the "unwatch" button more often than I used to use the "watch" button...

But maybe having a bunch of watched threads that I know probably aren't critical to check will cure me of the notion that I have to clear all the "watched" threads from my home page list when I log on... I'll know that I can just let some of them drift a while....

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I think I am a fan, so far. Patti

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

Dave I realy like it I get lost so easly now I don't get so lost and clicking unwatch is just as easy as watch

Love it....love it....love it!

Cochise, AZ(Zone 8b)

I really like it!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

I opt for it set up this way. I really like it! Thanks... Guess that means I'm watching this one too... : )

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I didn't even notice it! LOL

Wilsonville, OR(Zone 8b)

I like having it this new way!

Moss Point, MS(Zone 8b)

I like it too. I don't post unless it's something I want to follow usually.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I noticed it yesterday. I love it! I'd much rather specify the threads I no longer wish to watch than remember to watch the threads I do want. Does that make sense?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I have been noticing it for a while now and I like it a lot.

I am narcissistic enough that if I comment on a thread, or give advice to someone, I want to see what further comments there might be--agree or disagree.

Long ago, like many other DG'ers, I used to belong to GW and would take "excursions" on DG. I had signed up for the Newsletter but hated it after a while, as all it posted was all the "new" plants added and the inane comments of people that were members on this site. Frankly, this was BORING to someone who did not know anyone from beans. Coming from the GW site where there were more serious posts only, one of the things that REALLY bugged me about DG was how many people were posting non-important comments like Critter mentioned. Like: OH, that is beautiful! Or--WOW! Pretty!. Nice picture! or such. It still bugs me! Do people post those comments just because they want to see their names on the forum? To me--if you want to contribute anything, make it meaningful and helpful. To post anything trivial, like these non-significant comments, is--to me--self-serving.

I really hate wading through dozens of "Ohs!" and "Ahs" from people that have nothing more substantial to contribute. They just spend their time all day in front of the computer cruising through dozens of Posts and leaving their "footprints in the sand" that they have been there.

I love this new feature. It saves me that extra step of going back to the top and clicking on "watch this thread" if I have contributed to it. I AM interested on what feedback others will have, or correction--or agreement to my comments.
WHY look at someone's thread and see 25 responses, when 12 of them are "Oh how pretty" or "Nice picture!"????

North Augusta, ON

ohh...how interesting!! :)

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Gitagal, maybe everyone isn't as eloquent as you. ;) Sometimes people just want to drop in and say a quick encouraging word.

Merrimac, WI(Zone 4b)

I like it...I don't post on a thread unless I plan to watch it for a while and there were many times I forgot to "watch" a thread.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea. I have now become as "addicted" to DG as anyone else. I check it at least 4 times a day and if there are NO replies to threads I am watching, or NO D-mails, I feel cheated. BUT!!!!! I all the 4 or 5 years I have belonged here, I have NEVER just posted a reply saying any of the things I mentioned above. I'd like to think that I can contribute more than that.

I am NOT as "hoity-toyty" as I sound. I am not that at all. I just say what I think.

Gita

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Gita, I think you have it wrong on people's intentions when they post things like "oh what a pretty flower", etc, I don't think most people post just so that their name shows up somewhere, I think they are just showing their appreciation of the beautiful flower, landscape, etc in the picture. When someone takes the time to post a picture of something, I think they would like to know that other people appreciate the beauty in whatever picture they posted. Obviously there's no real need to watch threads like that if there's not much useful information so I can totally see your point there, but I think you're wrong about most people's intentions when posting, we all lead too busy of a life to have time to post just for the sake of posting.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I love it!!!! I post and forget that i did and love watching the learning going on in a given thread........This way is the best of all worlds!!!! thanks for changing it!!!!!
I love pictures most of all....I can't talk without pictures.....
Gitagal, you may have to put up with our 'wows' and other inane remarks....this is all part of the learning process. Just last night keyring posted pics of Kohleria which were the most outstanding colors ever.....we all went googling after we said our praises to her for posting and sharing.
