Pruning saws

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Recently I have seen Silky Saws mentioned in gardening magazines as being the gold standard in folding saws. When I go back and try and find the articles I never can and all I can remember is "Pocketboy", one of their classes of saws..

According to their website there are many, many models and I am trying to figure out which one is best for me. Does anyone use a Silky and which one and why. Thanks, alice

I have no clue how you pick a saw. Maybe the bigger the teeth the bigger the task??

Ardesia,

I love my cheap hand saw. I am sure I would love a more expensive one even more, but as long as they do the job--I love them.

They are good for cutting canes and branches just a bit too big for the pruning sheers, but too small for the big bow saws. Also, as they have skinny ends, you can get in between other canes and--say--cut out a dead one, like in a Rose bush. If a serious branch comes down from my Maple tree, I prune-cut, then hand saw-cut, then use the bow saw to cut up the fat ends.

Indispensable, I say!!!!

OK Gita, big teeth or small??????

Hmmmm....

Medium????

I would ask the salesperson where you buy it. He will probably ask you what you intend to cut with it. I think very small teeth would not do well cutting through live branches. They are more for dried lumber.

Not much help, but I really never thought about the size of the teeth. My saw has fairly large teeth, but I did not choose it for that. There was a whole bunch of them hanging around for 2 years all rusted (cause they were outside once) and no one was buying them for $ 12.95. So, I said to the guy in charge of Garden, "I'll give you $2 a piece for them" and so I bought about 5 of them. This was several years ago. it also helped that i work at this store.

Wow, I need to find a store like that. LOL

Maybe you are right about the fine teeth being for dried wood, it makes sense. I do have a small saw with a pointy end and come to think of it the teeth are pretty large. The folding one would just be more convenient for carrying around the garden. Right now I have to carry the saw or large and very heavy loppers and it is time to simplify.
