I live in florida, the weather is not so great and I know with how humid and hot we get here it is really hard for most plants to survive. I have never really gardened but i'm trying to get a small garden together now for my mother. The only problem we are having is that I have no idea what will grow and what can survive all year long. I have planted beautiful great plants but every time I do so, they either die from the weather change or the seeds never grow. The only plant that has stayed by my side are orchids.
If anyone knows of any great flowering plants that will be able to survive please let me know. I'm looking for flowers in the orange, red and yellow tones..
Thank you,
Deisy
Help!: Florida Gardening
If you would like to try some native varieties
lantana
verbena
brown eyed Susans
blanket flowers
All are supposed to be drought tolerant and enjoy full sun. I have dabbled half-heartedly in Fl. for years and have just now decided to make something of lasting beauty. Good luck.
Many people would be jealous of what you can grow your climate! There are tons of tropical plants that love Florida's heat and humidity. If you want to grow plants from the Midwest or the Southwest then you'll have some trouble but if you try things that are more tropical in nature you may have better luck. Things that are native to your part of Florida are always a great place to start.
Here are a few sites that may help you

You might also check out the Tropical Gardening forum, that one's open to everyone so you should be able to access it.

I would take a drive/walk around any parks, hotels, malls etc, and look at the variety of plants that you can grow in Florida, you are so lucky, AND, spoiled for choice, maybe as Ecrane has sugested, you are trying to grow plants that you remember from somewhere else and these are really not suitable for the Florida gardening, when I visit, place called Napels, I am just bowled over by the variety and colour of the plants and trees, I have brought home with me to UK a few books on the plants and trees that grow there just so I can recognise them by name when I see them growing in gardens or parks, so either go to the book shops, or the librery to look for beginners gardening in Florida and you will be amazed at what you can grow and recognise from elsewhere, it will largely be a case of adapting the soil for some plants, choosing the right type, or a different kind of gardening from what you are used to, so good luck, dont give up as you will get there in the end.
