Easy Way Remove Grass

Aiken, SC(Zone 8a)

I had a deck built last fall I would like to landscape. It is surrounded by Bermuda grass now starting to green.

Anyone know the easiest way to remove? I would prefer to lift the grass and transplant it elsewhere.

If you want to save and transplant the grass, rent a sod cutter. It will be much quicker. Also the depth of the cut will be consistant - something that is very hard to do with a shovel.

Daisy0501,

If you don't want to rent a tool, and don't mind getting on your hands and knees, I have found that an old steak knife cuts through grass easily and gives your grass a nice clean edge. After I cut the grass the full distance I want, I just make perpendicular cuts to the side that will be removed, making each cut piece a size that is easily for me to lift up by hand and carry to its new location.

Make sure that you water the grass really well the afternoon or evening (before) the following day when you will be removing your grass. This will make it easier to handle and will give your grass a good drink of water before it is transplanted.

Hope this helps!

Let's have a real challenge!. I am converting 10 acres of coastal hay into as many acres of veggies and flowers that I can support and maintain eventually for organic certification. But the hay grows a lot easier then the veggies but I still want to maintain certain areas of coastal account of the erosion that might result, like between the beds. Any Suggestions? The coastal keeps invading the raised beds for the veggies.
