I finally got the camera out....although for some pretty common flowers. Hoya javanica...this one was given to me as variegata, can't tell now but when I received it, it was variegated. It has been under lights in an aquarium all winter.

great flowers and pictures everyone. I've enjoyed looking at them. I'm curious as to what camera you folks are using.
the pictures are awesome!

Mine is an Olympus C-765, it is 4 megapixel with a 10X optical zoom. Very easy to use and the zoom is great for closeups.

Carol - I got this one from you after seeing a gorgeous picture on your website. I love the red-and-white flower combination. Although the scent isn't as nice as others.

Imadigger - I have a Nikon Coolpix 4500 (4 megapixels). It's very complex so I just leave it on automatic to do its thang.

I use a Canon PowerShot S2 with 5.0 megapixels...still learning how to use it. DH has the EOS Digital which I REALLY like to use!!!

vitellinoides has an umble about half the way open, pimentliana looks like it is finally going to open some instead of blasting them all away and today I found a peduncle forming on H. magnifica

this is not so good a picture but ,it's my pimenteliana finally opening after blasting its buds about 6-8 times in a row!!

I cant quite put my finger on what the scent reminds me of but I think I finally found a hoya that I love the smell of!! The fragrance is awesome on this one!!

DM, I'm happy that your pimenteliana bloomed! It is my favorite smelling hoya. I told TamiF that I wanted to put it in a baby pack and take it with me everywhere while it's in bloom. Love the smell. Congrats! -joanne

This is my hindu rope. It is now 10ft in length and covered in blooms. I posted a few weeks ago on antoher thread within this forum that I had taken a head count of the peduncles on this plant. I stopped counting at 129 and that wasnt all of them. I said i'd post pics when more opened so here it is.

Currently there are about 50 open peduncles of blooms on this plant. There was just no way that I could get a shot of the entire plant but this will give you an idea of wht it looks like right now.

If you look at the bottom of the pic try to imagine 2 1/2 to 3 more feet of growth below that all loaded with flowers. Everything that you see that looks like pink balls on the rope is a peduncle of open flowers!

Oh David, you found me a hindu rope, you shouldn't have :) Really a gorgeous plant.

Tami, I dont even want to think about what it would cost to ship this plant!!!! This one would have to be hand delivered!!!

My H. mindorensis is going beserk this year. I've counted 8 penducles on it and it's not that big of a plant. Not as many as David's hindu rope, but still. I'm so pleased that this hoya blooms like this in my unheated San Francisco flat.

Gracias, senora. You sent it to me, a few years ago!

Gorgeous!!!

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

Julia, both of those plants are awesome. That mindorensis looks as though it has ice crystals on it!! I absolutely must find one of those, but where would it go? Just when I think that I have every spot filled, I manage to squeeze another in! HA!

They remind me of those old fashioned push pin and sequin Christmas ornaments:

My Momma plant blooms all year round, too! And I just love it. It has been hanging in the same spot for years, just off of DH's office...direct sun in the afternoon in the summer....the rest of the time indirect very bright light. You are right, Julia...it does look like a pin cushion or a Christmas Tree ornament!!

Well, I have one pin left...

For some reason most of the buds on my Publicalyx cv Silver Pink just fell off one day, to my complete dismay. Luckily though, one managed to hold out and has flowered all on its own... beautiful smell like carnosa.

Hoping my other umbels aren't going to suffer the same problem!

Hills...that is a great photo!!! The simplicity and focus on just one flower is terrific.....thanks!

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Carol, this ones for you. This is a cluster of H. diversifolia buds that should be open any day now!! Told you I was gonna bloom this one this year!!

Okay so it isnt diversifolia but its just as pretty when it blooms. It's actually a cluster of H. cv Mathilde buds. I counted 35 peduncles on this plant today and a lot of them are ready to open.

Sorry this one is a bit fuzzy but if you look closely you'll see why I took this pic. This is a cluster of buds on "red buttons" but they are mottled like peppermint candy. Two clusters are like this. There is already one fully open peduncle but the buds didnt look like this before they opened.

I wonder if the flowers once open will have this mottled effect to them?

pubicalyx 'Red Buttons'

Thumbnail by markroy68
Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

There is a H. pubicalyx published as 'Chimera' because of the different colors showing up in the corolla and corona at blooming. I have had two hoyas (publicalyx) show this mottling: 'Royal Hawaiian Purple' and 'Red Buttons'...at different times, under the same conditions. The conditions were afternoon sunlight. I have been told that the sugars in the flowers heat up and affect the colors. Now...I am not a rocket scientist...but it makes sense to me...and I have seen it happen in a H. publicalyx in the sunlight, and NOT in a H. pubicalyx in the shade. Go figger.

Great flowers, Mark.

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

Mark,
Those flowers are gorgeous. I have a fairly new Pubicalyx 'Red Buttons' that has put on a lot of growth since I got it, but of course I'm still waiting for blooms. Is this hoya a slowish bloomer? Also, I heard that Pubicalyx usually only bloom when the vine is facing downward. Have any of you noticed this? So how's the smell Mark?

And I loved looking at everyone else's flowers...gorgeous! I hope to post some soon (I just have Lacunosa and Multiflora blooming now...nothing too interesting).

Gabi

San Francisco, CA

Gabi, some pubicalyx cultivars, like 'Silver-Pink' have to get fairly large before they bloom, but 'Red Buttons' seems to bloom at a younger age. It smells great, just like carnosa or compacta to me. I hadn't heard that about pubicalyx needing to grow downwards to bloom- at a guess I would say that most people, who probably have 'Pink-Silver', don't have blooms until the plants are quite large and the peduncles, which form on new growth, are probably hanging down on the newer portion of stems.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

After viewing Marks pic of his "red buttons" i'm wondering now if mine is in fact "red buttons" The corona on mine appear to be white while Marks flowers have a red corona. David Liddles description say "black flower w/ red center.

Can growing conditions cause the coronas of a flower to be a different color or do I most likely not have "red buttons"????

dmichael

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

I have a large 'Silver Pink' that blooms every summer, but it is a rather large plant. Last year the blooming vines were climbing up the frame of the window, so I don't think the vines need to hang. I have smaller plants that have yet to bloom.

Kim

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

Yes, I actually heard this "rumor" about 'Silver Pink'. I'm glad it's not the case, at least with 'Red Buttons', although one of the vines is starting to get long enough that I can face it downwards on the trellis....guess I was getting excited about that for no reason!
Mark, your explanation sounds right. I didn't realize that 'Silver Pink' takes longer to bloom. I wouldn't know first-hand about the scent, since my Carnosas and Compacta haven't bloomed yet...but I have heard they smell great...some say like chocolate?

DMichael, I've read that Pubicalyx blooms can differ greatly in color, even within the same cultivar. 'Red Buttons' can be anywhere from pink to red to black. Coronas can also be white. So I wouldn't rule yours out as being a 'Red Buttons'.

Gabi

San Francisco, CA

Here is a better shot of 'Red Buttons'. I think that the corolla color can change with this one- mine are the solid dark red they are reported to be, with little mottling. The flowers of this one aren't ever really black, they just look very dark under certain lighting conditions. I haven't heard about the corona color varying, it has appeared to be a really nice sort of transparent looking dark red in all the photos I have seen. Annie knows a lot about the pubicalyx cv.s, I think, as she has written about them a lot. Maybe she will surface for a comment?

Thumbnail by markroy68
Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

I remembered seeing pics and reading that they varied in color (both coronas and corollas), because I always do some internet research on the hoyas I get...just basic flower color, growth info, and care info, and write it down in my little "plant book". Anyway, I now remember where I saw those pics of the color variations. It was on Christina's page (myhoyas). If you look up Pubicalyx and then 'Red Buttons', you'll see the one with the white center.
Anyway, I hope mine looks like yours do Mark...I love that deep red color..sort of burgundy. Another thing I love about this hoya...the color of the new leaves are just such a beautiful burgundy...wish they stayed that way!

Gabi
