Beautiful flowers everyone. Seems like our weather has made up it's mind, and it may be summer now. Snow storm last week and 86 today. Hopefully I will have some blooming soon. My H. naumanii bloomed and I was so surprised to see the color. On Carols website it is the most beautiful pink and mine came out a creamish white. So yes climate, humidity, etc. really does play a big part in the coloring of hoya's.
April's Frenzy of Flowers
Tami, didn't Ann's H. naumanii bloom the same as yours? I know I read a post about one of her's that bloomed much lighter than Carol's. I find that interesting. How did it smell? It is on my newest order to AH and I would like it to bloom pink but can live with a lighter shade, but I do want that smell. I would be way bummed if it didn't have any grape smell. Where are your pics? Any javelina running down the canyon? -joanne
Joanne, I didn't see Ann's post. I am so far behind on post it's not even funny. Was it recently? I do have a photo of it. I didn't get a really good wiff of it. It has a second peduncle blooming now, I should go get it out of the GH and bring it in. I had tomatoe plants in the GH as well and thats all I could smell, on top of my allergies. I will let you know in the morning if it smells like grape juice. As you can see from the picture it's not very pink.. :(
Well darn Tami that's too bad! It'll be interesting to see the color on mine whenever it decides to bloom. The humidity in the greenhouse stays pretty high. It's still a pretty flowa!
Blessings,
Awanda
Tami, Ann's post was last bloom season, spring or summer. I still like your photo, the bloom is quite pretty. Do let me know if the next blooms smell. How does it grow for you? Do you have H. subcalva too? I have 2 small starts of that one and I have the hardest time getting it to root and grow. I just yesterday put it in with the DL cuttings praying that it does well in the tank.
I like your H. javelinaii family:~) I'll bet they have a smell.................and not grape juice :~)
God bless, -joanne
Joanne, I brought H. naumanii in last night so I could sniff her up last night befor bed and early this morning. To me the smell is like a light sent of bandaid. Not a very good smell to me at all. It grows really good for me, I thought I would have problems with it because of our heat, but it is doing good. I do have H. subcalva, I bought it last year from Mel and it has just now put on a new stem and 2 leaf nodes, slow but sure. I planning on getting it down into the GH sometime this week, so I know it will take off then. Good luck on rooting yours, some of them can be real bears.
Oh, and the Javelina really do stink, you can smell them comming. Ewwwww.
Awanda it is pretty, but I was so wanting it to look like CN photo. I love the pink. I'm going to try a brighter spot in the GH to see if it changes the color a little bit. Is yours getting ready to bloom? If so please show it's photo, I know you have more humidity in your GH than I do, and I would like to see what yours comes out looking like.
So now my question is, I know there is a pink H. australis out there. What is it called? Where can I find one? Oh shoot I guess I can go read Mark article again and see if there is any info on a pink one.
I have never heard of a pink H. australis.... perhaps it is a nutritional thingy.
Carol isn't there one called pinkie or something like that? I can't remember where I read it. I believe it is a cross between H. australis X H. subcalva? I don't know maybe I am dead wrong, but I know I heard or read about it somewhere. My memory is about as long as my little finger. I went down to the basement 3 times yesterday to get the chair cushions, and by the time I got down there I couldn't remember what I went for. I remembered this morning, but now it's raining. Or was that yesterday :) LOL
Tami ....rothflmbo....too funny!
Blessings,
Awanda
LOL Tami! Band-Aid smell. Well, it's a far cry from grape juice, I may have to rethink it.......
AH has a listing for H. australis X subcalva, crossed by Ed Gilding. So see, your memory is just fine!
Thanks for taking the time to 'smell' for me :~) I wish it smelled better than a Band-aid but I kinda' like the smell of them! -joanne
Ah, yes...the H. australis X H. subcalva has pink flowers...nice fragrance too.
O.K. I think I had a DUH moment. I think what I read was that a person had a H. australis that was pink, and it was labeled "pinkie", and another person quoted to them that they may have a hybrid of H. subcalva X H. australis and it could possibly be H. naumanii. This whole story may be wrong as well. Sorry if I am quoting somebody and I am way off.
Joanne, I had my sniffer all ready for a big wiff of welches grape juice. I like the smell of bandaid too. You get a comfort feeling when you smell them and put it on a owie. Like a big pot of chicken noodle soup on the stove in winter. Not a good on a hoya.. :)
There are at least two hybrids of australis and subcalva. One is sold by Ted Green as 'Pinkie' and the other was crossed by Ed Gilding and is sold by AlohaHoya without a cultivar name. H. naumanii MAY be a naturally occuring hybrid of australis and subcalva. They all three look a lot alike, and can be creamy white or pink or in between the two. The one from Carol does have an interesting smell, I can see the "band-aid" analogy.
