Plant Predjudices

Joshua Tree, CA(Zone 8b)

Have some of you noticed that some gardeners have a definite dislike for some plants? I have heard of predjudices against (for example) Shasta Daisies, Hosta (too common I guess) Roses (too much work) My native Datura is a noxious weed to farmers. I know there are some undesirable plants that can be invasive and destructive. I am talking just a plant that someone DISLIKES.
What is a weed to one gardener is an exotic to another.
My neighbors do not understand, why I actually encourage the natives here. Very large and old Yuccas are ripped out , because the people here want a more tropical looking plant instead. So there goes a 30 year old Yucca with the Backhoe! Amazing to me! But everyone is entitled to their opinion!!
I know someone , here , that decided she would not tolerate any hot colors in her garden( to my advantage) I received all red, and yellow and like color plants that she ripped out. Even the vegetables grown next , were blue, Green beans, squash, Tomatillo etc.....
I guess it is Human Nature to want what you dont already have.

Michelle, that's what makes our gardens uniquely ours. If we all liked the same variety and colors in our gardens, it would be oppressively boring. I too
love the Hot Colors, but I can certainly
admire the beauty of the Pastels that so
many others love to grow. I understand
that the plant was an old timer...but I
would be inclined to agree with your
neighbor....yucky, yucky, yuccas! Way
to aggressive!

Michele, I am learning to truly appreciate the native plants of this region, and I'm trying to incorporate many of them in my landscaping plans. Why fight mother nature? It's much easier to grow the things that grow well......

(But I must confess I have killed a couple yuccas. They were choking out a wonderful, heavily scented old rose, and I had to make a decision, and I chose the rose.)

ok here is my opinion, i like the yucca and century i planted it under my sons window when he was a teen and it kept him in at night. he and his friends did not like getting a butt full of yucca and century plants, lmao and slept good at night

It's funny how your taste can change, though, rather suddently. I never liked Sweet Williams, Petunias, Allysum, Candytuft and the likes. Now that I'm up close in my neighbor's garden taking care of her plants, she has all of those things that I once turned away from. The plants are so lovely in containers that I had to take a second look and say..ohhhhh..to myself :)

I didnt care for the wild roses. Now my hubby wanted one. It is now one of my top favorites. And HEY I like those Yucky Yuccas! The desert has taught me to appreciate what miracles bloom here. You have to admit the Yucca has Glorious bloom.

I have one varigated yucca that I like very much - and yes the bloom was just incredible this year. There are many plants that I don't chose to grow myself, but really can't think of one that I truly dislike. Except maybe those that fail despite all of my TLC!!

There aren't many plants I could say are truly 'ugly". I've said before ,that our house was landscaped like a cemetary by the previous owners. ( Very dreary ) Now, it's extremely hard for me to throw out ANY plant... so I 've kept what I could. You know, any plant, yucca or otherwise, can be utilized in a creative way to landscape. I happen to have some "weeds" too, that I like. Some of my plants are much more invasive than they are. Plants are like people, coming in all sorts of colors and personalities. But I agree with God, they're ALL good.

Well, I mix pastels and hot colors. I'm sure that some folks would find my color schemes a bit gaudy, even clashing, but it's the individual plants that appeal to me that I am most interested in.

I have to agree with you woodsprite.... I mix all colors too.... I like it that way... my prettiest beds are ones where I just stick leftovers in ..... when I an planting... I really only have one bed thats certain colors its yellow and white.... with a little orange.. but mainly its because alot of things I don't really know what color they will be so thats fine with me. As for the yucca I don't like them either still trying to get rid of mine. lol and they are like the energizer bunny they keep coming back and coming back. lol But my DH likes them so I wanted to keep one..... but I do think there are pretty in the right place my yard is just not one of them. lol But farmgirl might have an idea there with the teen control I have some cacti too I might just have to do that under DD's window.... lol But to each his or her own... Most flowers are really weeds to somebody.... so another persons weeds are another persons treasures. lol

I have a long list of dislikes but if it grows well it can stay, I'll not get rid of a living plant even if I really don't like it.

I'm not going to say what I don't like I had to wear armour to come here and post for a couple of days after I divulged last time LOL j/k.

And God Bless all our gardens!

A BUTT FULL OF YUCCA???? Too darn funny! Being the mother of four little girls, I will have to make a note of that for when they become teens! Maybe I will have to find a way to make good use of my prickly pear cactus. LOL I have yet to find a plant I can't stand, but there are some things I have grown from seed and just decided not to plant them again. I don't have a huge amount of space so I try to grow the plants that I enjoy the most and send on the extras to someone who would really love them. The way I have found to utilize the most things and different colors, is to do the front beds in cool colors-all the blues, pink, purples and whites, with yellow for contrast, then plant all the hot colors-red, oranges and yellows in the rear. It also allows the front and rear to appear as seperate places, even though some of the grasses and such are repeated since they are not of one certain color scheme and that gives them some unity too. My newest idea for a garden is one of huge plants. I can't grow too much in the way of tropical plants in my zone 6 garden, so settle for things that look tropical. I have had a lot of fun with cannas and elephant ears, and castor beans and I would love to try Chinese rhubarb. Just gotta come up with a good place to do it. LOL Gee I am wordy today. Maybe I need to get outside. Cleaning is definately over rated which is why I am sitting here instead.
Have a great one!
