First Morning Glories

Also, this was interesting to me. One of the Flying Saucer vines did suffer some damage (probably when I knocked the whole darn tray over) so I had to clip the vine. It appears that it is now sending out a new vine just above the break point. Very cool. Hope the pix is clear enough to see (you can see the broken part kind of sticking out at the left).

I love your coat hanger spirals! I tried that once and found it was too much work! You can get a smaller gauge wire and do the same thing probably a lot easier. WTG Grow_Jo!

Joanne, it's good to know that they try to regrow after damage. My kid flew his foam & plastic airplane in the living room a couple days ago and it crashed into one of my MG seedlings. The vine part above the cotyledons snapped. I hope it's going to survive. He's just little squirt so I couldn't be mad when he came to me on his own and said, "Mum, I broke one of your Glories near the window." He then apologized and asked if we should try to tape it back on. I really had to fight the giggles over that, lol.

Okay, no flowers to show yet, but look at the buds on my Flying Saucer! I'm so excited about this. He is still living inside, and the way our weather is going, he may ALWAYS have to live inside.( It is snowing here right now and we are supposed to get 10 - 15 cm, or 4 - 6 INCHES. And we had snow on Monday too.!!! Okay, done ranting. )

Flowers any day now, I assume?

Snowing! I should worry about the 38 degrees it is outside now. LOL

That's a great looking MG with all those buds. Do you have any others growing, or just the Flying Saucer?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Hi Rev, also have Star of Yelta, Cameo Elegance, Flying Saucers, Sunrise Serenade, Scarlett O'Hara, Mixed Colors, Scarlet Star, Candy Pink, Moonflower, and Bluish-Purple Flaked. The last two are still under grow lights; all the rest are in a south facing window; they got bumped by my tomato plants! But they seem to be doing fine. Have you got a crop going?

Joanne

Looking great Jo! Well done!

Not yet. All my seeds are still soaking. I've been waiting for the weather to warm up.

(Zone 7a)

I know a lot of us have vicariously enjoyed all the winter-grown MGs - great thread, Jo.

It doesn't seem like that long ago that you started these, almost there.. be sure to post photos.

Healthy happy looking vines there! Ditto on photos!

Woo hoo! The first one has opened. Ummm, but I'm thinking this isn't actually 'Flying Saucers' is it? LOL. Don't care - it's my birthday, and what a cool gift!

Pretty! I like that hint of pink in the star!

and Happy Birthday!

Nice blue MG, Joanne, happy birthday to you!

Joseph

PS the MG looks like Heavenly Blue to me.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Thanks X and Joseph!

Yes - I went into the plant files and it looks like Heavenly Blue to me too. Guess I won't bother sowing any of the HB seeds I purchased right away - no need!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Today's blooms with Orchid buddies.

The MG blossom at the bottom of the photo was kind of malformed; it was split.

I Love that picture! You can`t ask for better than that!!! Georgeous!!!!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Okay, here's one of the first outside blooms. It's from another not-Flying Saucers plant. White with faint blue star. Star of Yelta bloomed outside yesterday but bloom was so teeny I didn't bother taking a picture.

And here's a shot of where I've got a bunch of other glories planted, including the star of yelta. DH built the trellis for me - it's 7 feet high by 12 feet long.

Way to go Joanne! It won't be long before your MGs are scrambling up that trellis (nice of DH to make it for you!)
I would've had some pics to show you but (sigh) we had a fierce storm roll through on Friday. Some MG vines were still woven through the fence and the bases severed because the winds tipped over my planters. Here I was worried about frost last week....got through that just fine and then the storm. Trees down all over the place.
I will start all over again with the seeds I have left over and drool over everyone elses photos.

Thanks for sharing!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Erynne, that's awful for you. All that work - how sad. Do you have lots of seeds? I have more than I could ever hope to plant - let me know - I think I dmailed you a list previously, but could send again.

Joanne

Orangeville, ON(Zone 4b)

Aww thanks Joanne, but I've got a good back up stash, probably more than I could plant, lol. It's just getting to the point where little buds were forming ya know.....disappointing. I'm nursing several along that got beat up but are still alive. I'm more sorry for my neighbour losing her 30 yr old tree.....Mother Nature sure is bossy!

I will have MG blooms this year if it exhausts me to no end!

Orangeville, ON(Zone 4b)

Well golly gee, I got me some MG blooms today on some ratty looking vines. I don't know how they still managed to produce something so pretty after being beaten badly. I didn't know I had buds and wasn't expecting the surprise when I ventured out to the garden this morning.

This is supposed to be Candy Pink, but I don't know for sure as all the tags blew away with the storm.

Have no clue who this is as I did not set out to plant any MG that looks like this. Ipomoea purpurea maybe? Blooms are fairly small, maybe a bit bigger than a twoonie.

P.S. the bloom has sawdust particles on it from DH cutting down a tree.

This doesn't count because I didn't grow it; got from a market. I didn't expect this to bloom.....what a pleasant surprise today! I wonder if my lime green one will bloom?

Ipomoea batatas 'Blackie'

As a side note, my Ipomoea setosa is still hanging on afterall :o)

Gorgeous blooms Erynne! Good to see that you didn't lose them completely after all.

Joanne

Nice looking flowers, Erynne!

Erynne,
Nice work there, those batatas are really neat too, also watch out for seeds on those, they do form seedpods later in the season. I like it when they already have the flowers on them when you buy them.. instant gratification...lol A.

Orangeville, ON(Zone 4b)

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I noticed more buds this morning and another big HB bloom so I'm very happy to be able to grow these. I'm really glad that the Candy Pink is indeed what it's supposed to be.
I looked through my notes and I've come to the conclusion (by process of elimination) that the seed for http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=3626984
came from a commercial seed pack marked as Sunrise Serenade. I'm a little ticked.

Gourd, I will keep my eye out for those seed pods on I.batatas. Do you know if they come true from seed? Will 'Blackie' make more of the same? I like the leaf shape on this one.

Tks,
Erynne

Mesilla Park, NM

No, I don't know if they come true, I sent all the seeds to Emma, maybe she is trying them this year. Hopefully she will comment on here.
A.

edited to add: I've gotten several different flowers that are not what they are supposed to be, but they are beautiful anyway.

Parks Tie Dyes are an example of NOT tie dyes, but some real nice ones have come out of those.

Erynne - The gene that causes the splitting in the hige type of 'purps' can sometimes produce regular looking blooms at first and gradually progress to splits and doubling...it can also skip generations...so,you may see some splitting as the plant continues to develop or it may remain entire...like Antoinette mentioned >either way it's still a nice bloom...

The Ipomoea batatas might change characteristics to varying degrees when grown from seeds >which is one of the reasons that commercial stock is clonal...any changes may not show up right away and could take several generations to be visible...
the interesting aspect of any possible changes is that you may get something that you like even better...

TTY,...

Orangeville, ON(Zone 4b)

Ah, I see. Thank you for that explanation A and Ron. To be honest, I was ready to rip it out of the pot, lol. On a good note, another vine in the same large pot has given me a lovely Sunrise Serenade bloom this morning.....very excited but of course my camera was at work. Now I know for certain that the other vine came from the same seed stock because I kept them together.

Tks for the additional info on I.batatas. It's been a great little workhorse for blooming.
