I am experiencing serious Commitment Issues, Dumplink, so you did not miss anything. Seems that I cannot make a decision, so for now I plan to slap in annuals as the mood fits me and I'll supplement those with container plantings.
I'll look into the grasses. I have to be careful with them though because of the local concerns over the Chesapeake Bay habitat, but I certainly do enjoy them when they're done well. Speaking of which, I was in Chicago last October and had the privilege of stomping around Millenium Park. Good Grief, if you ever want to see a ***Truly Spectacular*** landscape design which uses ornamental grasses, you absolutely must go to Millenium Park. Better yet, sign up for the Chicago Marathon so that you can see the park in all its blooming glory.
As for making the most of my small space? It's only because I'm Greedy.

What plants to use around my small patio?
LOL - well, it's well-applied greed!!!
I've decided to go with boring annuals this year and just finished planting a border around le bistro using a mix of three different colored impatiens. The pansies that were in the ground have been ripped out and stuffed into containers. Fear not, I will beef up the containers in this space eventually...
lovely wrightie....very nicely done:)
I think that's a wise decision. Trees and shrubs and perennials are harder to change your mind about. While you're out enjoying your bistro, you'll be thinking we need more shade; let's build a overhead structure or wow, you can see these annuals right out the window of the orange, garnet and yellow bathroom; I wish they fit in with that color scheme. So, I think your permanent plans will come unbidden, by themselves.

Very wisely written,Carrie .
I think you'll just KNOW while you are relaxing in your special area one day exactly what would be right Wrightie ! In the meantime ,annuals are beautifully colourful .
Please let us know ,as we can all relate to your thoughts .
Emelle
Wrightie,
It looks really nice with the pansies and impatiens, but I must say that you did such an excellent job of putting that patio down....it is JUST RIGHT! I really looked at it for the first time in the last picture and can't believe how perfect it is.
Suzy
Oh, thank you, Suzy, but I cannot take credit for laying the pavers. I merely chose the design for the hardscapes. Being a "virgo" with a few anal-retentive qualities, I hired the pros to do that work because I knew it wouldn't look right if I did it myself. I used to work for that particular nursery and was already familiar with their excellent craftsmanship... it also didn't hurt that they cut me a break on price for good behavior.
I'm breaking it in today by working outside using a wireless connection. =)
You call that WORK??
lol, pagancat!
It looks GREAT. And, as has been said, I think some idea will come along and you'll be glad you opted for this. Keep us posted!
Ha - t'was rhetorical, m'dear.
Hey, *my* chair doesn't have a cushion... what's up with that?
You'll get your own cushion when your jokes improve.
>youch!< ...
Okay fine. *Be* that way.
LOL, lurking and laughing...
xx, Carrie
Carrie, I'd give you a cushion for your chair...
Thank you so very much, but as it happens, I have my own cushion for my chair! Wrightie, a really lovely gesture though.
xx, Carrie
Oooh... Pagan's going to *love* your reply. I've been Slammed!
=)
La La La I can't hear you, La La La...
>pagancat, fingers in her ears, looking at the sky...
this is too funny to watch !!! :)
Would you people STOP hissing and scratching for long enough for me to ask Wrightie a question? In post # 3437831, in the right foreground, is a large pot with what in it? It looks a little like an anemone, which I can't get to grow up here, but it could be a pansy, which we have in abundance.
XXXX, CARRIE (shouting so PC can hear me
meow meow meow MEOW
Carrie, I'm sorry to report that those are lowly ol' pansies in that pot.
I do have some anemones growing elsewhere though. Sweet little plants.
Oh, now *that* was mean!!!
"I can grow anemones, nyah, nyah, and you-ooo-oo cayan't...."
You forgot the thumbs in ears and jazzhands waving!
wrightie....i have my fingers in her ears and she is singing so she cant hear what you are saying(grin)...
Oh, I see. Hmmm... Do you think it would be helpful if I took a photo of my lushious anemones once they bloom and then posted the photo on here? Maybe a picture that includes my rolling with delight in the beautiful anemones... you know, because they grow so well *here*?
Okay! Every one of you go to your room!
Anyway, my stuff was blooming before any of your stuff.
nyah
Gee, this looks like fun!!! I didn't read the whole thread, but have you considered some canna? They can grow in standing water. I have a dwarf one called Panache that needs lots of H2O. It's pretty pale yellow, with a blush throat. Lovely and spreads out nicely. Also lobelia likes it wet.
wrightie...i still have my fingers in her ears and she is asleep....but i like the
photo of you rolling around in your anemoes...i have no clue what they are but
they sound lovely:)
Wait, I'm the one who can't grow anemones. Is that ME you're taunting?
xxxx, Carrie
"La la la....
pagan...so funny:)
Yes, she's an amusing creature, when she's not snarling! (Carrie ducking to avoid next taunt!

this thread is making me laugh
me too.
There is no time for laughter. Gardening is a serious sport.
Full contact gardening is.
Full contact gardening, huh? Well, as a matter of fact, I just got through telling Pagancat that if I like my new fragrant "bouncing betties", I'm going to roll in them... ... in the nude...
You get LOTS of extra points for nude. Even more if you keep chickens. Nude chickens, of course.
