Very nice link. I didn't know they had an actual website with information online.

Greensboro, AL

They don't, this was a pdf article that I found. Hope you don't mind my pilfering your list from Classic Viburnums. I wanted to make a resource thread for people who wanted to know about viburnums - I think that list from Classic Viburnums is invaluable. And that you should post it is invaluable.

Also, I don't think DG members know about plant files or use it enough. A really great resource.

Another resource of course is Viburnum Valley, who doesn't mind telling you what you want to know and more! So, he says if you want to know about virburnums (1) ask him, (2) Get Dirr's manual of woody plants, and Dirr also has a new book at Timber Press on Viburnums and a CD as well. And (3) Lord Lloyd Kenyon's Viburnum.

Sooo. For everyone who thought the only white frothy harbingers of spring were the dogwoods and bridal wreath spireas, (and bradford pears, and an errant apple or plum tree) please explore those other stately flowering shrubs: the viburnums.

I sure don't recommend V.plicatum for those of you in the south. I finally pulled mine up and put it through the wood chipper. That thing looked awful all through the summer , even with mid day shade. I planted two V.rufidulum this year and hope they do better. There is an excellent picture of that one on the link above.

Greensboro, AL

V. plicatum is supposed to have a southern range through Zone 8. My garden center in Tuscaloosa says they are essentially buying Zone 9 plants now for this area.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Good grief... I never realized there were so many of them. The only one I really know well is V. prunifolium and til you posted Gloria, didn't realiz e it had so many different cultivars. So many interesting names.

Gloria... Your so bad. : ) I am supposed to be studying for massive tests this week before sprign break and you had to post all kinds of goodies I would rather spend the time hunting up and looking at.

Think I gonna look at the ones with pink in their name first.

Greensboro, AL

You know you can use Edit/Find to scan a page for a word such as "pink". The only place that word occurs on this page is in your post. So go study. We will wait.

Virburnum plicatum tomentosum 'Molly Schroeder', supposedly more reliably pink than pink beauty.

Dirr's hydrangea book has been out for a while but his Viburnum book isn't out yet is it? Glad you mentioned his new Viburnum book. That's one I'll buy.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

And when will VV put out his book?? If not on Viburnums, how about the proper pairing of wines and blooms??

Presque Isle, WI(Zone 3b)

Victor, I've yet to see an opened bottle, just displays and those guarded by attack cats. ;>} Ken

the viburnum book apparently is not published yet. here is a brief synopsis of 'the man' and his work.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Good point, Ken.

That 'Molly Schroeder' from the Morton Arboretum at gloria125's second link above was unmistakably light pink. I looked at the photo I took last year and it looks as if it was white. The photographer is to blame for that because that was definitely a pink flowering plant. Guess I don't do well with white or light pinks. I don't know if it is more reliably pink than 'Pink Beauty' though.

Scott County, KY(Zone 5b)

Can always count on Ken (and now Victor) to revive the Arachis gallery...

For a widely available and really easy to grow fragrant pink flowering viburnum, you ought to get Viburnum x bodnantense 'Dawn'. For me, it starts throwing blooms before Christmas on any warm day. Peak bloom this year was in January, when it was unseasonably warm. The cold snap starting later that month and running through February knocked it down, but it is now throwing the rest of the flowers that hadn't opened earlier. Great lead in to all the normal spring bloomers in the fragrant crowd.

Planted in winter shade, it may just delay bloom till March. Supposed to be hardy up at the Morton.

And, its only $10.95 at classic viburnums! Hope Starlight appreciates all the work we did. Any more pink viburnums?

Elburn, IL(Zone 5a)

I can't seem to get my 'Molly Schroeder' to show much pink :)

'Mary Milton' is the sterile "snowball" type of V. plicatum with pink flowers http://www.springmeadownursery.com/images/VibMarryMilton001.jpg Mine hasn't flowered yet, so I can't vouch for it.

And the CD from Classic Viburnums! My oh my....took me about 4 hours getting thru it....had to wipe up drool every now and again ;)

I'm with Equil, Dirr's Viburnum book is going to be a must have.

Not much pink, eh? That looks like a lot more pink than the plant growing at Morton. Although I remember that 'Molly Schroeder' being pink, it certainly wasn't as pink as your plant regardless of the skillset of the photographer.

I haven't seen the CD, another thing to add to my to do list.

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

In January I enjoyed listening to Dr. Dirr as he talked about his 20+ year research with Viburnums. After the class, he took us to the UGA trial gardens and also one of the research fields. We were given several trees of different varieties. My dh was impressed that I had a class with Coach Dooly. I was just impressed to be there to learn.

With renowned Viburnum experts like Kevin and VV willing to share their knowledge, I'm not sure I'd spend the money on this book.

Greensboro, AL

Kevin: that 'Molly Schroeder' looks pink to me.

Count this as "confessions of a viburnum deprived" person: The idea of a pink virburnum to me is almost as whacky as a pink Queen Anne's Lace. To me a viburnum is a floriferous shrub with lacy white flowers that have a greenish tint. They provide a stately and sedate background to the neon brights of the spring flowers; they set off the pinks of the Asian magnolias, and the garrish colors of the spring azaleas. Like the white dogwoods, they provide a sensibility to the garden that would otherwise look like madness ascending in the spring -- what with shocking pink redbuds, and purpley 'pride of mobile' azaleas, along with blatant fosythia, and orange flowering quinces. Like jellybeans in a container.

But after seeing, Kevin's 'Molly Schroeder", maybe in the back corner of my yard?

Elburn, IL(Zone 5a)

Wow gloria--thanks for that link. They are completely full of it though. Wrong wrong wrong.

The Perfect Pollinator for All Your Viburnums
A superb shrub in its own right, with fragrant blooms, berries, and fall foliage changes..... And while 'Winterthur' is showing off, it is also pollinating Brandywine, Cardinal Candy, V. carlesii, Blue Muffin, and every other Viburnum in its vicinity

Where to start?

1) 'Winterthur' blooms way late, actually the latest of any I own. That means 120 different kinds come before it. Plants like Blue Muffin or V. carlesii have bloomed, fruited, and probably already had their fruit eaten before Winterthur even begins to flower.

2) Cross pollination only happens in closely related Viburnums. They are correct that it is likely a good cross pollination candidate for the other V. nudum, 'Brandywine', but the others listed, no. For me, it blooms so late, it only blooms coincidentally with other V. nudum. In theory, it would be an excellent cross pollinator for any V. cassinoides, V. prunifolium, V. rufidulum, V. lentago, or V. x jackii, but in practice they just don't overlap in bloom times here.

I'll send them a little note.

Elburn, IL(Zone 5a)

also gloria--I don't think Viburnum plicatum +/- tomentosum is a good choice for you in Alabama. It sulks here if its hot, and we ain't got nothing for heat here compared to AL. I'd be interested to hear if it does well for anyone down South. Just from my experience growing all the varieties here, I think it would do best in some kind of high rainfall lower, mountainous zone. It does not like drought, not one little bit. Shade is preferable here too. If I have one in full sun, it has to be constantly watered. The best doer I have, that is in full sun, resides next to a leaky hose. For those of you who grow it, chime in ---I'd like to hear from the West Coasters vs. East Coasters, as I think they could do better in both locations, far better than Midwest or South.

Greensboro, AL

Escambiaguy: above says his V. plicatum did not do well in South Alabama. Hopefully, we will get some some zone recommendations in this thread.

Also, pollinators. Is there is universal pollinator as 'Winterthur' was represented? Sounds to me like you would have to group them all according to bloom time and select the pollinator for that group. Would it work to have just any two or three from the same bloom time-frame?

Elburn, IL(Zone 5a)

Exactly right. Add to that the fact that you group by closely related types. So, if they are closely enough related, AND bloom at the same time, you are good to go! There is no universal pollinator. Now, there are no doubt some unknowns out there. V. dentatum and V. acerifolium are a semi-unlikely pair, but one of the participants here(or at GW) has these two and they get good fruit set. They ARE in the same taxonomic Section, so it makes sense. Lots of questions remain though. If I had one V. dentatum, and one V. dilatatum, would it work? In theory, yes. But, I never had that combo. Just figure that the more closely related you can get a couple Viburnum(without being a clone), the better cross pollination success you will have. Two cultivars of V. dentatum that bloom at the same time---perfect. Seedlings of V. nudum that bloom at the same time--perfect.

With your relatively tropical climate, you should check out Woodlanders Viburnum offerings. They have lots of rare, warm climate types(or at least they used to). Call them up and ask if they are cuttings or seedlings. You'd want seedlings for best fruit set. If you want to get some variety from them, list your choices here and we could steer you to the ones that are related.

Short on photos.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Taking a quickie break. two exams down and four more to go yet this week. Ugg.

yes, Thank you very much. Sure do appreciate the tiem and effort. Those sure are some beautiful pinks.

read what you said Gloria about how the Virbums should be white to go alogn with the other colors. That sounde d like soem sound advice. So think I gonan get some white to accents the other colors and then get soem pink to accent up in the back where I have some type of old cherry that blooms white. Forget which one it is. Know ya can't eat it though but keep it for bird food and looking at the blooms.

Wonder if Viburms look btter in small groups of the same color or if they would look ok as a hedge of mixed colors of white to lt pink to darker pink blend or is that a no-no.

I keep waiting for VV to write a book too. He's got the knowledge plus I amsure it would wrote on more of the personal level along with the scientific.

So VV where is your book or when it gonan be published?

Think for a white, I might prefer the snoball type as I like doubles.

Wow. Must have been nice meeting Mr. Dirr. Hipefully one day I wil get to. I just got to meet Dave Armitage. He was outta flyers at his talk, so he got my email addy and sent me a copy.

Guess I know what some of tax rerund gonna buy. LOL

Elburn, IL(Zone 5a)

I have always liked the look of V. propinquum in pictures, although there is no chance it would grow here.

Gloria--I nominate you, since you have a Viburnum interest, and you live in the right zone, to be the first forum member to grow the Viburnum with THEE best name.....yes, you know it.......Viburnum harryanum! Let us know if it has a good round shape, or perhaps it just stinks??? You won't know till you try! Unfortunately, it's not in the same group as V. odoratissimum, or they would make quite the pair.

Greensboro, AL

Starlight: I think a happy Viburnum looks good no matter how you place it. An unhappy vb -- might as well jerk it-- ask Escambia guy.

Kevin: Ill keep my eye out for V. harryanum. Did you mean you were going to send me one?

WHA Wha What? trouble. in river city? There is a song, N'est pas? Billiards anyone?

Eau Claire, WI

I'm just not sure what to make of the last two postings.

Presque Isle, WI(Zone 3b)

Ya got to love this group!

Selma, NC(Zone 7b)

Gloria, of the ones listed by Woodlanders I have and highly recommend Viburnum bracteatum 'Emerald Luster'.

Kevin, I may try the V. harryanum one day but my first choice to try would be
. Viburnum cinnamomifolium . I've always loved V. davidii.

Can somebody help me? I googled the name Classic Viburnums to se e abotu orderign a couple of plants, but all I got was 4 hits and none of them looed like URL's with that name in them. How do I order?????

Also, I want to getone pink and one white, I am a border 8A/8b . They are gonan get more shade than more sun, so which would be the best for me? I am a pic person, and that bad sometimes, cuz I get what pretty and what not practical. This will be the first V.'s for me to buy and have no idea really what type I need.

They will have pines above them that will filter the sun.

Would appreciate some advice and wi go with whatever is recommended.
