I have been sprouting chestnuts and white oaks from seed and nurturing them in pots throughout the summer with the intent of transplanting them on my woodland property. On many occasions upon revisiting the seedlings a few days after planting I find them pulled out and lying dead on the ground. I tried placing a wire mesh basket over the seedlings in an effort to protect them. The baskets were removed (one was crushed ) and the new seedlings pulled out. I suspect the deer are doing this but have no idea why they would. Suggestions on preventive measures would be appreciated.
What keeps pulling out my seedlings

Do you have a way to anchor the basket over your seedlings? I use old pieces of rebar and pound them into the ground about 4+ inches and wire it to the basket. I think the deer just want to have a taste to see if the seedlings are good to eat.
