Hello! I have a question regarding my Rose of Sharon Hibiscus syriacus 'Minerva' (Family: Malvaceae Genus: Hibiscus Species: syriacus Cultivar: Minerva.) I am in zone 5 (Chicago). We planted 2 of them last summer, they are about 3 feet tall, and they did bloom. We are wondering is it time to prune and how much to prune. We have no buds yet. Thanks for any help.

When do I prune my Rose of Sharon?
my only experience with pruning rose of sharon is basal pruning after leaf out. is it too tall or irregular form for you? generally i do not do a lot of pruning to these shrubs.
We just don't want it to get taller than 5' or so. Also, do you remove the spent flowers?
Thanks.
We have 3 healthy Rose of Sharons about 12 yrs old. We have found that pruning them at the beginning of fall helps keep them at a reasonable and attractive height and size.. After they are well established, you should probably take off about half of their height each fall., otherwise, they can get very lanky.
A good rule for pruning any flowering shrub or tree is to prune within 3 months of finished bloom time.
no i dont bother dead heading this shrub, but if you want to take the time, it can do nothing but help.
