Below you'll see a pic of the only garden i have! It's beautiful when in full blossom. Everything in it is perennials. I attached this picture mainly to show the sidewalk. This picture was taken from my front door. When you follow that sidewalk it leads to the parking area. It's nothing pretty and I want to make it pretty. We do have a huge tree at the bottom of our yard but the roots are noticeable all the way up to the sidewalk.. Any suggestions on type of plants to border the sidewalk with?

its my guess that this area will be pretty shaded, correct, even with the western exposure?

Why, thank you, tcs 1366, you have made my day! Especially since I'm out of town right now, and so can't be in my gardens (where I am always drawn). It's great to be retired! Anyway, jyn23, I might suggest for an easy to care for, non-invasive, tough as nails border perennial - liriope. It makes neat mounds, will fill in the border, and does well in sun to part-shade. I put them in two years ago, and they are lovely, even though I basically ignored them after they were planted. I'll try to find a pic when I get back home, which won't be until Saturday. I actually show my DH all the photos....we're on a postage stamp of a yard -- but one day (when he retires) i'd love to have something like you do.

Liriope sounds good- it is tough . some stay clumped better than others, others creep out and you can get a solid row. I've found that my fountain grass will compete with maple roots, but its bad self seeder. maybe other ornamental grasses will compete though. the roots will make it hard for something new to establish, so give it a good hole to start with
