Here is my latest - http://lakehousecreations.com/wintersown_2007.htm
What has germinated so far?
tcs1336, I don't think those black-oil sunflowers come true from seed - I've only ever had one or two foot high spindly little daisy sized flowers from them, and the seed hulls are allelopathic so not much will grow where they accumulate.
I always did wonder what the plants they get the seed from look like though, and how they're propagated. If you want real sunflowers I'd get some other seed, they must be so hybridized for feed that they barely grow.
Thanks Mike.... i am growing (WS) a bunch of sunflowers.
I'll move these so i can watch them and see what they do.... but on your tip, i wont expect much.
well -- i'm assuming they are sunflower... i'll snap a photo tomorrow if it's not raining all day.
Terese
The sunflowers I get from bird seed are about 6 feet high and the heads are about 8 inches wide.
I have at least 1 or 2 new things every day. but it's going to be cold for the next few days. I've closed up my baggies that I had opened a little wider
none of my asclepias has germ. yet. I'm anxious for that.
I updated my thread above

We're supposed to get lows in the 20s for the next 5 days, so I chickened out and brought some indoors, put some in an unheated, enclosed porch, and the ones that haven't germ. yet are staying outside, as are the ones in baggies, which I will close until this wicked cold front passes. Tamara
It is 17º this morning so I hope the little babies are going to be alright. I am going to sow a few more that I hadn't gotten to.
Mobi, are you using the black oil sunflower seeds?
Wow. After a VERY SLOW START, I now have bachelor's buttons blue boy, helenium chelsea, Oriental poppies, 4 - 5 mystery jars, and portulaca!!! That's nothing compared to some people but compared to me, it's a lot!
I've had nothing in my WS containers for the last 2 days. At least I have a few new seedlings indoors--'Sungella' tomato, 'Tigerella' tomato, 'Mammoth' dill, and Bunny Tails grass. Tamara
Claypa, I don't know what they are, they just came up where some birdseed got spread around.
Way to cold here for any sprouts to peek out. The ones that are out probably wish they cold go back down and come back later.
Here's the latest http://lakehousecreations.com/wintersown_2007.htm
Great.
In spite of the recent cold, here is what has sprouted recenty . . . snapdragons, one carnation from five year old seed that was never kept properly! An icelandic poppy - really old seed left in hot and humid weather . . . LOTS of baby's breath, LOTS of lineria, cornflowers, annual poppies, and a few lupin, and I think a candy lily (lost the label).
But the stuff I thought would have emerged - coneflowers, hollyhock, larkspur, delphinium, columbine, viola, zinnia, mexican sunflower, lavender - still waiting on these.
Now - what do I do about the stuff that just emerged? They are on the front veranda, getting morning sun, still covered for protection.
Inside, I have three kinds of petunias, pansies, dianthus, coleus, oriental poppies, shamrocks, and thyme! Lots and lots of thyme. :-)
My babies still seem to be ok and it is 15º today. They are on the patio right out in the open. I wonder how long they can hang on?
A few more containers just germinated:
Heuchera
Japanese Anemones
Pansy
Sedum, several varieties
Sophora
Tomatoes
Viburnum
I haven't even bothered checking. We're currently having a blizzard. :-P Tamara
man,,, that stinks. Tamara.
we are gray and a tad windy (15mph out of the NW) but 32°
I saw on the news this morning about all the snow in Marquette MI.
I bet anyone near a "lake" is gonna get it. PooPoo. I feel for you.
Geez! New sprouts? It's 32 here but wind chill has been in the teens all day. Winds have been from the NW at 20-30 mph all day. Enough to blow a person away, and it's just biting cold. No sun, either.
Karen
You are not to believe this! In spite of the cold, more things are sprouting - saw my first coneflower germinate!
I believe it! I've been having new sprouts in the cold too. It's only gone down to the mid-twenties around here though.

I'm jealous! Nothing new here since March. :-P Tamara
calundula
I didn't plant anything too out of the ordinary, as this was my first year Wintersowing and I tried to limit my sowing to real hardy stuff.
Here is what I have so far- these were sown about halfway through March
Marigold's (Mr. Majestic, Petite Orange, Dwarf French Tiger Eyes, Crackerjack Mixed)Bachelor Buttons (White, Blue, and Polka Dot Mix)
Cupid's Dart
Prairie Coneflower (Yellow)
Dianthus (Siberian Blues)
Daisy Fleabane
Zinnia (Envy, Violet Queen)
Joe Pye Weed
Lupine (Pixie)
Still waiting on Agastache 'Apricot Sprite', Gomphrena 'Woodcreek Mixed', Columbine 'Clementine Mix', Delpinium 'S Blues', Orlay Grandiflora and Bells of Ireland.
I also have no germination yet from my Physalis (Chinese Lantern), although the ones I started inside already have their second set of leaves-

rudbeckia (2nd container
chamomile
feverfew
salad burnet
columbine
coriander
catmint lemon scented
knautia
Tanacetum corymbosum

my purple Siberian Iris finally germinated.
I think my bean vine seed molded.
i poked around in there and found white fuzz.
I hope I still have at least 1 seed left... i have to check.
I pre-soaked them like it said to do, but now that i'm thinking -- that is probably for inside sowing
- live and learn.
oh - i've updated my list
http://davesgarden.com/forums/p.php?pid=3280393
Don't feel bad, I didn't soak my sweet peas seeds and still all but 1 (out of 15) molded. Tamara
The way it is snowing at the moment I may not be able to see the winter sowing by the end of the day and I am not going out there now to check it.
Oh, yikes, I thougth everyone else was finally past the cold/snow weather also! We have a forecasted high of 50 today, and a low of 40 for tonight, with nothing below freezing in the forecast... so all the row cover and cardboard boxes are coming off today! I moved my WS containers back under the deck bench a couple of days ago, hoping they'd be OK as long as it wasn't bitterly cold... decided I was concerned about them freezing but also concerned that they would bake in the sun down on the patio! I will go out this morning and check on them and report.... Last week, I did see sprouts from a few columbines, so we'll see if anything else is peeking out. :-)
Our forecast for the next 6 days is dismal. I've seen nothing new in my containers in about 2 wks. :-( I'm going to WS some new stuff today and hope it takes. Tamara
I have two questions to ask you WS-gurus (who have helped this newbie so MUCH!)
How do I know when it's time to remove the plastic covers of my germinated jugs? How hot is too hot?
(I do know that that time has not yet come, since our day temps are forecast to be in the low to mid 40s for the rest of the week.)
'
Secondly, should I be covering up my germinated jugs at night when we have temps below freezing? I know that the idea of winter-sowing is that they are meant to get cold--but I have some germinated dwarf dahlia seedlings that now look kind of dead (25 degrees the other night), and I have other seedlings too. I note that other people are covering theirs. . .
Thanks in advance,
Emily
"too hot" partly depends on whether or not your containers are in full sun. I find that as long as mine are shaded in the afternoon (I keep an eye on them to see if they need water also), temps can get up to 80 during the day and they'll still be fine wtih the lids on. When temps are reliably over 40 or 50 at night, the lids come off for good... if I think it's going to get down near freezing, I'll put the lids back on at night. But that's just me, and I've been told I baby my seedlings too much. With this weird weather, I'm afraid that very few might survive otherwise.
OK, so I went out just before it started drizzling, and I took "inventory" of the sprouts in the containers...
Here's what's up so far:
Agastache rugosa
Agastache rugosa 'Apricot Sprite'
Agastache cana 'Heather Queen'
Armeria maritima (sea pinks) -- few early sprouts
Aster alpinus -- 2 sprouts of Dwarf Blue, several of 'Happy Faces'
Sweet Alyssum
Brunnera macrophylla
Campanula persicafolia (peach-leafed bellflower)
Centaurea montana (Mountain Bluet) -- just one sprout so far
Campanula carpatica 'Blue Clips'
Columbines -- sowed more than a dozen varieties in Feb, most have at least a few sprouts
Columbines -- sowed more recently (mid March), no sprouts yet
Berlandiera lyrata (Chocolate Daisy)
Daisy, dwarf shasta -- just one sprout so far
Dianthus mix
Alpine Strawberry (few, hopefully lots more will pop up soon)
Hibiscus syriacus (Rose of Sharon) -- 2 early sprouts out of several containers sown
Linaria 'Fairy Lights' (came up a month ago actually, but most of them have died off)
Lunaria, purple
Lunaria, 'Alba'
Lupine, tall purple
Lychnis (alpine and european alpine, so far no sprouts from rose campion)
Penstemon davidsonii (few)
Penstemon digitalis
Salvia lyrata 'Purple Knockout'
Saponaria 'Rosa Bella'
Silene
Veronica longifolia
Viola tricolor (Johnny Jump-Up) -- barely sprouted, but some self sown seedlings elsewhere are blooming!
Any tips for columbines? I planted 3 different species and got NADA!!! They were planted in Jan, Feb, and March. Tamara
Mine only started popping up very recently... I think you'll see yours in a couple more weeks.
today
arabis collina
lychnis coronaria
lychnis (2nd container)
veronica blue carpet
veronica goodness grows
dianthus (2nd container)
Thank you, Critterologist, for your recommendations about which temps are appropriate for removing the lids of my WS containers. I've been sticking my finger inside my various jugs, but I have no idea how its supposed to feel! So it helped to have some specific advice about temperatures.
Tonight it's supposed to snow here on the Cape--I'm just a newbie enough to the climate to be amazed!
CapeCod, the main thing you have to watch out for is that it doesn't get so hot inside the containers that your seedlings die -- think of leaving plants in the car on a sunny day... even with the windows cracked a bit (like the vents in your containers), it can get way too hot for them.
zone5, Columbines are a bit on the slow side. Just give them time.
I hope the snow melts off of my containers today so I can check them out tomorrow. The temperature is suppose to be 40º today. It is 29º at the moment. I am afraid the ones that had come up might just not be there anymore.
