Yes I know it's a lot but I have an almost empty yard to fill (just have small trees and shrubs, and a few perennials). I'm going to have a very busy spring break trying to get a bunch of these planted out.

I will second that.

The soil in mine has defrosted.

Oh, I've been so hoping to be able to post that SOMETHING has germinated for me, and today, as I peered into a 2-qt clear plastic juice jug, I saw. . . . little green leaves (Dianthus Chinensis, sown 3/01/07)! Oh frabjous day!
I've set out 43 various-sized jugs--didn't start WSing until Feb. 19. I have no idea why dianthus would sprout before my pansies that I planted earlier.
Wow, I guess now I get to join the Club!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I saw my first Morning Glories this morning... OH happy day, happy day.

I'll have to take a pic tomorrow... they were quite large, so they must have come up yesterday -- and i didn't see them.

I still have many containers NOT germinating... I'm thinking they are too wet. Possibly rotting the seeds ?? boy -- i'd be bummed.

We have had A LOT of rain this past week (well, since the snow melted)
I've actually moved most my containers to my covered front porch. They get morning sun -- and i have the lids off (our nights have not been cold... probably 50's... last night around 60)
but i dont want them getting any more water until they start to dry out a bit.

I have one mystery container... and it almost looks mossy on the surface.
Could they possibly be lost?

TIA,

Terese

La Salle, MI(Zone 5b)

I finally got around to taking a few pictures, I could only take the lid off of the Dianthus that have sprouted, But I have lots and lots that are sprouting out there, and have updated my data base and high lighted all the ones that are sprouting :o)

ME ME ME! (Not that it's all about me, but) ME! I'm sure I'm not the only one who's thought that I was going to be the only one this didn't work for, but um I was beginning to think I was the only one this was not going to work for. LOL!

My first sprouts today.
Bachelors Buttons
Lupine

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Here are my sprouts to date:

Asclepias currassavica
Carrot "Little Finger"
Dianthus barbatus "Ruby Moon"
Digitalis purpurea "Candy Mountain"
Geranium ssp. Silver Shadow
Helleborus augustifolius
Helleborus foetidus "Gold Bullion"
Helleborus niger
Polemonium pauciflorum "Silver Leaf Form"
Prunella "Freelander"
Viola x wittrockiana "Silver Wings"

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Shirley, was your helleborus fresh seed? If not, where did you purchase it from. I would love to grow more.

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Anita: I'm not at home to look at my notes, but I do remember that NONE of my Hellebore seeds were fresh. Hopefully what germinated are Hellebores and NOT weeds! I received the Helleborus augustifolius & niger in a seed trade and the Helleborus foetidus "Gold Bullion" I believe was from Pinetree Seeds on sale. I'll double check when I get home this evening.

Note: I'm trying to grow baby carrots in a milk jug with Miracle Gro. I hope this experiment will work because I can't grow them in my clay soil. They come out crooked, so I hope this works.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

What about a planter, Shirley. Give you more room.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

I just checked my jugs, so to speak. I have some germination, at least one or 2 sprouts, in (I think) 31 of the 49 jugs I have sown. Still haven't started to sow those more tender ones, even though our temp has been around 80 the last few days. Have been busy weeding beds and cleaning them up, moving a few perennials. My husband mowed the lawn last night so I think I have enough grass clippings to finish up my lasagna beds today. I'm working on 2 of them.

Karen

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Well - I have about 200 linaria that have germinated. What was I thinking of? Lots of neighbours are going to get HOS from me :-)

Painesville, OH(Zone 5b)

My sweet pea seeds are covered in white fuzz. I'm assuming this is not normal? Should I try sowing them again? Tamara

Paris, TN(Zone 6b)

It is SO fun to read what everyone has sprouting! My iris finally sprouted this week too. I had to let everyone begin to go topless as it is quite warm, in the 80's here during the day. Everything that I already transplanted out is doing very well - all surviving and many thriving. I really kept my number of containers low this year and now I wish I had done more!

Not a WS item, but all of my big pots that I put zinnia seeds out in last week have oodles of sprouts :) These days I feel like just running through the yard tossing seeds out onto the dirt to see what pops up (I don't have 'beds' for my flowers). But I'll try to restrain myself :)

~Sunny

First MG to flower this year is attached. I grew these on my south-facing window sill on top of the dresser - they now have a real dirt home.

Thumbnail by Hineni
Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

Tamara: I think the white fuzz is a fungus. If you haven't done so already, take the top off the container completely and put in full sun. Let it dry out a little and the sun might kill it.

Karen

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

to date:

bachelor buttons 3/21
alpine dianthus 3/21
artemisia 3/25
yarrow 3/25
love-in-a-mist 3/27
Mexican marigold 3/27

I guess I thought once there were a couple warm days they would all take off. but I should know better. it takes how long it takes ;0)

I planted 5 black-eyed susan vine seeds in the house and got 100% germination. I think I should transplant to the pot they're going to grow in. and about 100+ tiny creeping thyme seedlings. I lost my love-lies-bleeding to damp-off, so I'm starting over...should have thinned them out and/or transplanted sooner. I read that they are prone to damping-off.

Gram: love lies bleeding wintersows very well, and no damp off. I did some last year and they were huge!

Painesville, OH(Zone 5b)

I am totally psyched! The Cerinthe major var. purpurascens germinated! http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/216/ That is one of the seeds that I really hope grows. Another one I am very excited about is vigna caracalla (http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/1884/index.html )...that wasn't WS--I started it by nicking, then soaking, then baggie method, and now it is in a peat pot under lights and on a seedling mat. I don't care how much babying those take, as long as I can get it to bloom! Today's other babies are Coreopsis tinctoria, Gypsophilia pacifica, pansy 'Antique Shades', canterbury bells, and 1 other one that I forget (and I'm too sleepy to go to downstairs and check). See you in the morning! Tamara

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I try to update the Plant Files with a notation that the plant grew by wintersowing. I think it would be helpful to others who want to try the same one.

Painesville, OH(Zone 5b)

Good idea Anita! TAmara

Zone 3, germinated March 28th: Bellis, Bachelor's Buttons & Shirley Poppy. Sown late Feb, early March.

Painesville, OH(Zone 5b)

First snapdragon seedling appeared today. Sown in Feb. Tamara

Sorry...false alarm, I looked at the wrong label. It wasn't a snapdragon, it was larkspur, which is still cool.

Tamara,

I did early sunrise on Feb 19th and they germinate on March 18th
and the ones that were sown on Mar 9th, popped up on the 19th.

so yours should all be coming up soon.

milkweed --> Did anyone sow these or have in the past? None of mine are coming up yet, and i've WS'd the scarlet and Sandvine seeds. Nothing yet on either.

any tips or clues?

Terese

West Pottsgrove, PA(Zone 6b)

I sowed A. currasavica on 3/7 and it came up today. I've been editing my post above as new sprouts appear.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm still waiting on all my milkweeds - 4 different varieties.

I'm updating my list above as other things germinate...the list is getting longer :0)

http://davesgarden.com/forums/p.php?pid=3334989

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 4b)

I went out to check in the rain today I just couldn't wait any more.

Hollyhock Creme de Casses
Hollyhock Double Yellow
Amorpha canescens Lead Plant
Aquilegia flabellata Blue Fan Columbine
Aquilegiaax hybrida McKana's Giant Yellow Columbine
Artemisia ludoviciana Prairie Sage

I was surprised that anything new had started. It has been cold and rainy.

Painesville, OH(Zone 5b)

Well, my germination seems to be slowing down quite a bit. There is nothing new today, and only 1 seedling yesterday. I did some research on the seeds that haven't germ to find out what could be going on. Some germinate erractically, and can take months. Others need darkness, and some need much warmer soil temps, and others have only a short time of seed viability, so those might never germinate. Tamara

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

OH!!!! I was soooo excited to see scarlet milkweed sprouting. YAY.

My seeds have really slowed down too... and i have containers with only 1 sproutling in it, when i know there are a lot of seeds under the soil. *sigh* and some containers say with sunflowers or morning glories with nothing poppin' and other containers with the same seeds that are growing.... sort of upsetting...

Denver, CO(Zone 6a)

today:
godetia
nemophilia penny black
nemophilia
dianthus
cardoon
oomphalodes - forget me nots

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

about 5 weeks ago i bought my first bird feeder -- using the mix bird food with the black oil (?) sunflower seeds... today when i was out back looking at all the weeds i need to pull.... i noticed about 8 lil baby sunflowers that have germinated.

i have no idea what "type" of sunflower, but i did recognize the lil seedling.
I will probably transplant them to a more suitable location... but neato!!

Denver, CO(Zone 6a)

That happened to me to, now I have millet coming up in my strawberries!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

luckily (i guess) directly under my feeder... it's only mud. I have not planted anything there yet... one day -- maybe ground cover.... the weeds usually fill that in.... but i've been cleaning it out.
I forget what a mess feeders make... but it's ok, since it's not in my yard, and it makes the animals happy... saw a pair of mallards out there last week. they are so cute.
