Well as far as my WSing containers goes, I got Red Button Bachelor Buttons :o) Just seen them today. I just hope the weather change don't hurt them.

But things that have been outside that is coming in, my crocuses are about an inch up, my dad gave me some small tulips (don't know the name of them) but they are about an inch and a half, then dh's hollyhocks are up and so are one of his Lilies it's a really dark red one (I covered with them leaves and the crocus too) also our irises, and all the trees are full of buds :o)

Well it is now starting to thunder, we are suppose to get rain with hail and the turning to sleet and snow :( It was beautiful out all day til now, so really can't complain with the temps we have had for 2 days in a row... Well when it lightenings I turn the pc off, So you all have a great night.... Storm is here...

Painesville, OH(Zone 5b)

Seandor, we won't be above freezing for several more days, so I'm not even going to bother checking my containers. Supposedly, next weekend, it's supposed to get to the high 40s, and then I might sneak a peek. Tamara

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I am sooo envious - I have taken such good care of everything. Yesterday afternoon, I carefully covered everything up in anticipation for this cold spell. When it was warm a couple of days ago, we moved everything to the shelter of the veranda, so seeds wouldn't cook in the heat . . . . darn.

But I am very happy for those of you who do have germination :-)

Denver, CO(Zone 6a)

seandor, why are you covering them up for the cold? Just curious. I don't baby any of mine, just put them in the shade and forget about them until spring. The cold is good for them, it cracks the seed coat. and makes them strong.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

'Cause I'm chicken. I want something to germinate!

Denver, CO(Zone 6a)

They will!

West Pottsgrove, PA(Zone 6b)

That's for sure. Try to stop 'em! The earth spins, the sun rises and sets, rain and snow happen, and Seeds Grow!

Mobi, I looked up that Iberis taurica, it sure looks nice. I guess it's not very common?

Denver, CO(Zone 6a)

I don't know, I got it from the national rock garden society that I get seeds from each year. It's an alpine plant so I thought it might do good here.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks for your vote of confidence (in the seeds - not me!) Looking at the front veranda - strong winds are blowing snow (SNOW!!!!) across the flats I covered last night. Just when I thought spring was here . . .

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I have "Wild Lupine", Agrostemma 'Ocean Pearls' and Agrostemma 'Contessa', plus 5 others I didn't look at the names.

I lost Texas Bluebonnets to damp off.

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 4b)

Hey, mine only get covered by snow and did well last year. Right now I can even see them since the snow melted enough. We are back to cold weather so no more melting.

Painesville, OH(Zone 5b)

Just for kicks, I decided to check my containers even though it's been very cold the last few days. Mine containers are in part sun, so I figured maybe the soil warmed just enough for something to germinate. I found 2 new seedlings--'Picotee' Cosmos and my 3rd, and last, container of 'Minarette' lupine. Surprisingly, the bachelor button wasn't affected by the snow and nighttime temps in the 20s. Tamara

I spent most of the day in my "gardens" doing stuff. Cleaned up foliage from last fall, moved some hens&chicks, but mostly futzin' with my containers -- they get A LOT of sun and needed watering, plus took covers off so they didnt roast (we were sunny and 60F today) then recovered them when the sun went down, it's gonna be 27F tonight.

I have 19 out of 69 that have germinated seeds.

Some others are Blue Fescue grass, Huskers Red -- and a few others i cant think of.

so -- things are coming along nicely.

Most of the snow and ice are gone from around my containers.

Woo Hoo!! I checked my containers this evening and I saw my first sprouts! I had a bunch of sprouts in my two Thyme continers:
- Thymus vulgaris - Common Thyme (03/20/07)
- Thymus serpyllum - Creeping Thyme (03/20/07)

And just a couple sprouts in each of these containers:
- Salvia x superba - Blue Queen Salvia (2/11/07)
- Gaillardia x grandiflora 'Arizona Sun' (2/18/07)

Brent

Paris, TN(Zone 6b)

I didn't record germination dates, just Y or N to Germinate?

All W/S'd on 12/22

Chinese Larkspur - planted out already
Blue Flax - planted out
Texas Bluebonnets - planted out
Lanceleaf coreopsis - planted out
Nasturtium Jewel mix - first and most vigorous plants this year
Poppy mix from Lonnies - planted out
Salvia 'Victoria Blue"- growing but not planted out yet

Also sown on 12/22 but slowly futzing along:
Blue Columbine - nothing yet
Black Barlow Columbine - just sprouted this week
Blue Plumbago - nothing yet
Polidor Cosmos - had one brave sprout for weeks, the others just now coming up
Helenium Moorheim - nothing yet
Helenium Autumn Lollipops - verrrrry slow growing, but some tiny seedlings in the last week or so
Coreopsis Seashells - a few showing up

Sometime between 12/22 and 2/13 I sowed these, but forgot to date when...lol!
Agastache Honey Bee White and Blue - growing very nicely
Monarda didyma - sprouted
Monarda Fistulosa - sprouted
Bachelor Buttons - grew like mad and are already planted out
Galliarda Arizona Sun - sprouted
Salvia coccinea F. Fire - nothing yet
Iris - nothing yet
Rudbeckia hirta - Autumn colors - a few sprouts
Sweet autumn clematis - sprouted immediately and then died :(

W'S'd on 2/13 - in a big open aluminum pan w/no type of cover at all - full of baby sprouts:
Coreopsis Early Sunrise
Zinnia Cut and Come Again
Queen Anne's Lace
Galliardia puchella
Coreopsis Seashells

In an even larger aluminum pan - starting to show sprouts, sown 2/13:
Purple and Pink Coneflowers, different types

So far the only no-show seeds I have at the time are:
Blue Columbine
Helenium Moorheim (but that was iffy anyhow)
Blue Plumbago - I think it's still too early
And I have one container that was labeled 'mystery plant' that apparently was so mysterious it also hasn't grown.

So I'm a happy camper, and starting to direct sow seeds now. I want to put all of my salvias and agastaches together, but don't have formal beds so I still haven't planted them out because I don't know where yet :) I have volunteer sunflowers already up near the bird feeder, and three morning glories that I sowed inside in a windowsill that just flowered yesterday. And a ton of veggies that are already in the beds.

I am very new to gardening. This was my first year winter sowing and thus started a little late for my zone 5 in about mid-march. I did not record start dates but all germinated in about 7 days. Started with some veggies and very very easy perrenials.

Several varieties of tomato Yes
Rainbow bell peppers Yes
Mixed hot peppers Yes
Gaillardia Yes
Snow-in-summer Yes
Marigolds Yes

If anyone has suggestions for other easy to start from seed perrenials please let me know! I am essentially lazy and do not want have to replant annuals every year, but am willing to trim back, prune or divide.

Denver, CO(Zone 6a)

cabrlamo,
Two that I found were very easy are
columbines
sweet william

but they are short lived perennials so.....

Longer lived perennials I found were pretty easy:
lambs ears

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

cabrlamo -- you sowed marigolds and they have germinated already??

wow -- i should get mine going. I have TONS of seeds.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

I checked my containers today...still frozen on the bottoms but...2 have germinated!!!

bachelor buttons - sown on 3/4
alpine dianthus - sown on 2/17

it's a real sign of spring :0)

Zone 3: How's this for crazy...three of my little lupin seeds have tails! Somehow they made their way to the top of the soil in the milk jug and started to germinate. I opened up the milk jug today and sprinkled a bit of soil on top of them; not sure why so many of the seeds have floated up. Way too early for stuff to even think about germinating - we had another inch of snow today and we're sure to see more. Still...kind of exciting to see something happening.

La Salle, MI(Zone 5b)

I have got germination on quite a few http://conniesgarden.com/WSing.html sown date in blue - germination date in green... This is exciting, I got babies :o) Couldn't take any pictures, can't take the tops off... I just hope our weather doesn't kill them all. I have also got alot of plants that have started coming up... My crocuses have bloomed and they are sooo pretty.

Connie

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

OMG, Connie, You are not seriously going to keep up that database with germination, are you? LOL! Girl, you are crazy! I can see doing the first 20, but not 500!!

Suzy

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 4b)

Still frozen here.

cabriamo, check out the wintersown data base for your zone for perennials to winter sow. I sow mostly perennials.

http://wintersown.org/wseo1/DataBase.html

La Salle, MI(Zone 5b)

lol Suzy, I have it wrote down on paper too. I have sown more since that list, just haven't had time to enter them on it... I used my frontpage program to create that and its not hard to edit it at all. Just no time right now to enter the rest, but I will keep it updated as time allows :o)

Thanks for all the info. Do marigolds not normally germinate that quickly? My father in law told me a quick start secret. He said to place the seeds in a sandwich bag and put in a damp paper towel. Then place the sealed bag on a heating pad with a towel over the top. Presto, it worked like a charm. I have sprouts now that are at least 1.5 inches tall for the marigolds. I have them under lights and once they sprout real leaves I will have the dome off and the lights closer so they won't get leggy. Does that all sound right? Or do I need to do something different?

I was also thinking of starting some perrenials late and having them in larger pots outside this season so I could plant them in their spots next year. Is that ok?

Painesville, OH(Zone 5b)

Connie, that is amazing!!! And I thought I was ambitious with 70 containers! I have 4 new ones to report after a couple days of nice weather:

Plant, date sown, date germ:
lavender poppy, 3-4, 3-22
mystery annual, 3-4, 3-22
'Mammoth' sunflower, 2-17, 3-22
Malva 'Zebrina', 2-19, 3-22

Inside, my double white datura, eggplant, peppers, basil, and vigna caracalla (WOO HOO!!!) have germinated. Four out of six Stephanotis floribunda seeds rotted. I'm sure the other 2 will as well. :-P If I can get the vigna caracalla to actually grow and bloom, that will make up for the Stephanotis. Tamara
