I like the cheer they have at Bronx College ;)
Coffee time once again
Too bad, Harper. But it sounds like you're better off not there anyway. I remember hearing that about the Harlem River on a Natural History Museum boat ride.
Dave, I think that cheer originated in that stadium in the Bronx. The one for that other NY team.
You're a Mets fan, eh? How did they do today?
Baseball does well on the radio and, therefore, is the best sport for gardening!
They play tonight - Opening Game!
I'll sign on for that subway series we were supposed to have last year!
Some mathematician predicted it for this year.

Let's go Mets!!!
Well that bed got mulch, I ripped out a bed that was entirely pachysandria and cleaned out some leaves from a few others. It would have been nice if the sun was out. I even found time to go grocery shopping and a do two loads of laundry. That means I'm officially off until next weekend!!!
Al - I don't think those beds will get enough sun for Dahlias. I'm going to have to keep an eye on them. I did plan on putting some hostas in though.
Has anyone seen Arlene??
Yeah - Mets are good! Actually they are all good.
Spring break for Anita!
I don't believe Arlene posts in this thread since the incident.
You're right Victor. We're better off where we are!
Anita, show more pics! I planted four tree peonies today and cleared away some winter mess. It was my official first day in the garden. It felt good! I'm sorry that the weather is supposed to be cold and rainy this week. Oh well... it's April after all.
Good question - where's Arlene? Hope she's okay. Al, hope I'm not too nosy, what incident?
Harper
There's no incident - she's OK
Here's some salt Harper...you need to take it with Al.
At least the rain is watering my pansies! Someone once told me that they planted their cannas when the forsythia bloomed. That would mean that I can probably plant them next weekend. I have two new spots for them in the garden. I liked them in the container too and will probably repeat that as well.
Hey Al, if I am planting the cannas, would it be safe to just plant out the dahlias too? I doubt we would get a freeze that would be hard enough to penetrated several layers of soil.
You're planting cannas already - you suck - it's supposed to snow a little tomorrow here.
Still sounds early - you would like the soil temp to be 55-60 or they could still rot before they grow.
I agree - still too early for summer bulbs, tropicals, etc.
Anita, what's the salt for? It's probably something obvious that I'm not getting... I'm still working on my morning coffee. Don't look at the clock! It's still morning for me.
I just read that my peonies would do better if I planted them in the fall. I hope they'll do okay.
Harper
Hi my dear northeast pals!!!! can you believe the weather???? it just feels like someone stole my ice cream.... great weekend and now this glooooolmy day and week!!!!!!!! oh I am suffering!!!!!!!
how about calla lillies? still too early to plant them??? do you leave your cannas planted during winter?
do you plant cannas and dahlias on the same bed??? or close to each other??? is that a bad combination??? ok, reascue me from stupidity!!!!!
I have had cannas in back of dahlias before, it's a decent combination.
I wouldn't plant callas yet either until at least all frost danger is past.
Harper - the salt is for not overthinking anything I write ;)
yes Harper - what Al said - Take him with 'a grain of salt'.
Victor, when do you plant your summer bulbs?
Ah! I knew it was something obvious. At least I have coffee in me now. Can someone turn back the clocks so it's only 10am for me? I'm just getting started and the day is over... oh well. I had a good night's sleep.
Harper aren't we in the same zone??? how come you getting up now.??... I am about to go home and water my plants... and check on turtles and dogs... oh today was a busy day!!!!!
Anita, I do them when I do tropicals (coleus, caladium, etc.) and summer veggies (tomatoes, peppers, etc.) - around second week of May. Mothers Day is usually my reminder. If I am doing them in my raised beds (30 inches high) I can go a week or two earlier since it warms up faster than the ground.
Thanks - I never got around to starting them in the house. I don't know why I remember the story about the canna's and the forsythia.
Kassia, why was I getting up in the afternoon? Because I can and I'm lazy. That's the most honest reason. I love my sleep.
I always wondered why raised beds are warmer. I understand how they warm up faster in the spring, because they're more surrounded by the warmer air. However, in the wintertime, why aren't they the first to freeze like our fingers and toes? This and other questions boggle my mind.
Harper
thought I'd start a new thread... http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/710542/
